Tranexacmic acid should reduce bleeds or cauterization when your count is high enough can help

Tranexamic acid can be used to prevent bleeding but what do I do if the bleeding has already started?

in reply to Davy

Pack nose keep an eye on it as sailor said be mindful of how much blood is lost and go to emergency where they will pack and give you tranexamic acid anyway ( or at least they did me via iv)

I pinch my nose. I have also been told that if it continues for more than 30 minutes to go to a and e.

Both replies are good advice particularly from Val-ann. If the bleeding has not stopped within a reasonable period, then your platelets are not bridging the gap. I have only had one nose bleed in 20 years and that took the best part of a day to stop and then only after an infusion of Ivig and platelets. Not good. Lost a lot of blood so be mindful of the time and A&E if necessary.

Hi, There, , When you are having the nose bleed, pinch hard on your nose while sitting with your head forward and breath though your mouth, a clean flannel that has been soaked in iced water and wrung out, changing it as needed, also helps. If the nose bleed does not stop, then of course get to A&E, taking a record of any medications that you are on, and what your latest blood count was.

If you have no one to get you to a hospital then call for an ambulance, impressing the emergency call taker that because of your ITP, that you are not just having a normal nose bleed but could suffer hypovolemic shock . In all of this, you those around you, keep calm as you can.

I have a stock of transoceanic acid tablets to take as and when needed, you need to ask your hematologist about this.

I hope this helps

Thanks for good advice, everyone.

In my case a bleeding nose is not life-threatening and I won't have to go to the emergency. My platelet hasn't been under 20 for more that 10 years and I've only had this one nose bleed since I was diagnosed.

However, although the bleeding only lasted 10 minutes I lost at least 2 fl oz of blood and the bathroom floor was all red. It wouldn't be nice if this should happen in a public place, least of all on an airplane.

Average of 100 nosebleeds a year, since I was two... I am now 32. They last anywhere from 1 minute to TWO hours! so I am no stranger to nosebleeds and still get freaked out haha I have had my nose cauterized every few years since then. It helps for a while but am upset I had it done now. It scarred the inside of my nose, which is not very thick to begin with! I have found the best way to stop them is to stay calm, take a few deep breaths, find a ice pack to place on your neck/forehead, wherever feels comfortable. Sit down. Pinch with your thumb on the side that’s bleeding. Fingernail pointing down/hand up. Keep pressure on it for a few minutes before checking if the bleeding has stopped. A wet, dark coloured face cloth is what i use. Then the blood doesn’t scare me as much. I have never passed out. Good luck!
