Sjpriya,

The side effects of steroids used in ITP treatment initially can be distressing emotionally ,mentally and physically and long term which is why we are weaned off them as quickly as possible. In my case I had no platelet increase response to them ,even at a dose of 60mg prednisolone a day. I still had the swollen face, hypertension, tiredness, and very moody. This will go gradually as the dose is reduced ,initially quickly and then more slowly. But do NOT just stop them suddenly or you may find that you have substantial problems with your adrenal glands. Much of this depends on your initial dose of the steroid, how it is administered, which steroid, and how long you have been taking it. We have all been through it and know how dreadful it can be. The moon face can last several months, but will go away in time as the dose is reduced. Not everybody will have some , or even most (lucky devils) of the nasty side effects.

Good luck and sympathy,

Derek

Hi, you can't really stop the side effects but as with the heartburn side effect, you can be prescribed Omeprazoles to stop that. I started off on 80mg and was slowly weaned off over 9 months cos a sudden drop that was tried made the platelets drop too low. I had knee cramps at night, couldn't sleep and weight ballooned. I had to watch what I ate and keep portions low and eat often or I would end up being sick. Certain foods would stay down others wouldn't so I kept packets of complan in the cupboard. These are milkshake powders that give you the vitamins and minerals you may miss out on should you feel too unwell to eat. As above these will subside as the steroid dosage comes down. Take in plenty of calcium as the bones get stripped of it from the steroids. Take care and I hope you will be off them quickly.

Hi

The side effects can't be stopped but you can make it a little more bearable. I am on high dose at the moment and am trying to see what time of day is best to take for me. Mornings are not good as I then feel really awful all day & awake most of the night. So I gradually started taking later in the day and have found late afternoon a good time for me, I start feeling rough about three to four hours after taking so then go to bed and i find I can sleep through the worst of it.

I also ensure that I eat healthily little & often stops me getting shaky and light headed, more calcium rich foods, less fatty & processed to reduce salt intake, have heard that this helps with reducing the puffiness. Also I reduce sugar intake in an attempt to not put on too much weight. I try to do some exercise if I feel like it getting out in the fresh air and walking helps me feel better.

It is just finding what works for you must admit when I went on them the first couple of times I was too concerned to fiddle around with taking at different times of the day so took mornings only but now I feel more confident and have found out what suits me. I take the view each of us are different and what will work for some will not for others. I hope you will feel a little better soon.

The only way to avoid side effects is get rid of steroids as soon as possible but this is not in your hand so take folic acid and calcium while you are taking these steroids. or if you are facing any problem with your digestion system take pantop tablet or any other substitute of this on daily basis.

but must consult with your doctor before starting any of these medicines.

hope for the best.
