I've been on it for 13 years. Any ideas why it could tank for 2 blood draws? 6 weeks or so. I'm worried a little. can you become resistant?

I would phone your haematologist on Monday and see if they can reassure you, do you have Clexane or any blood thinning injection to help when it is low? I think most people on here would have it to cover until the Inr improves.

Hope you manage to get it sorted, please let us know

Thank you for answering. I talked with the drs office on Friday.

I do plan on calling Monday. It sometimes is low...but always has rebounded. Thank you again.

Hi 3boys

What's your target range or target INR eg 2-3, 3-4 and what dose of warfarin have you been advised to take in mg? As daisyd says, do you have Clexane? If so, what syringes do you have in milligrams (mg) or International Units (iu)? Eg 60mg, 100mg, 10,000iu.

If you get back to me I'll try to help until Monday when you can phone your haematology clinic and get professional help.

In this instance, no matter how much personal experience and expertise we have as members, this situation needs to be monitored by a medical professional, preferably before Monday, although it is appreciated that week-end situations are always difficult. Mary F

I agree with Mary, although many of us have experience of Warfarin and its dosing - I self tested and self managed for 10 years - it is not for us on here to give dosing advice to members as we are not medically qualified.

I would not do anything with out checking with my doc. I have seen him for 19 years.

Thank you Mary.I also have CKD . I hope that is not affecting it.

Again thanks!

My target range is 2.5-3.5. It used to be 3.5. I will be fine..just a tiny bit worried the coumadin has stopped working. It hasn't stayed this low for awhile. I'm sure with the increase it will help. Thank you so much for answering.

Hi 3boys, I would be popping into the hospital for a check up, if this is like this, as you perhaps do need the opinion of a medical professional before Monday, or perhaps out of hours. Especially if you have any of the typical symptoms associated with low INR. We are not medical professionals on here, although we do have personal experience and expertise to call on. Mary F x

Thank you Mary

I will be talking with my doc tomorrow. Just wanted advice from people who might have experienced the same problem. I would never substitute it with medical advice. I see my docs at least every 6 months and he has been my doc for almost 20 yrs

Thank you again.

Have you eaten anything a bit different to normal. Eating more green leafy vegetables when the weather is warm can change your INR . I am sure you know about vitamin K foods but sometimes you can have made a change without realising. I once had a big drop caused by a sudden increase in beetroot. It wasn't on the usual lists but I did manage to find out it was high in vitamin K. It was a relief to know what it was. Hope youth back up to normal range soon. Ann

Nope..just almonds I started eating more of them..I eat a lot of veggies. I skin my cucumbers

I know what can do this since I have been on it so long. That's why it is confusing.

Thanks for your input! :)

Hi 3boys,

When i have low INR I reduce my intake of K-vitamin vegetables. But I guess you have already thought of that after 13 years habit..

Have a cheques as soon as possible as Mary and Dave had suggested.

Best wishes from Kerstin

Thanks everyone... I am not looking for medical advice. I see my doc every 6 months. He has been with me through every diagnosis. I was just looking for answers as to why it could drop. Besides the obvious. Hope I didn't offend anyone

Hi 3boys

I hope you weren't expecting medical advice from me! Generally, as you'll know, on this site everyone's careful not to mix unqualified comments with personal experience.

As I was sure would happen, a lot of people really care and are offering their support to you. All I would add to my support is to consider this; if your INR target range is 2-3, at 1.7 you are only 0.3 under target. Still a reason to seek professional medical advice though.

Warmest best wishes to you,

John

John ,

Thank you. My target range is 2.5 to 3.5. I didn't think I was asking for medical advice. I just wanted to see if anyone had experienced it for longer than a couple days. I have had drops before...just not this long. So I was just asking. :)

Hi 3boys! Bit of a personal question but are you peri-menopausal by any chance? My INR used to go up and down like a yo yo when I was peri-menopausal. Just a thought - I might be barking up the wrong tree. But as everyone has said above if you've taken warfarin for so long it should be checked out. Good luck with your Doctor tomorrow. xxx

I didn't just delete that! I was trying to respell something. Although that is a great idea I had a hysterectomy and ooperectomy 10 years ago. I was in surgical menopause since then. I was 36. Thank you for that idea though...it was a good one! :) I also have chronic kidney disease..and hope it isn't from that.

in reply to 3boys

Hi 3boys,

I also have CKD stage 3, I think they said it is due to Hughes. Is yours Hughes related, plus it says other evidence of kidney disease whatever that means. I have been with a phrenologist for about ten years now. They are always monitoring scanning etc. To tell you the truth I bet everyone else will agree, I am sick of the sight of hospitals.

Hi hon

I've been on warfarin for about 3 years now and although my inr's never been exactly stable, for some reason since January my inr's gone low and stayed low despite increasing my dose. I had a clotting incident in January, so have been topping up with clexane injections, will soon be changing over to higher dose of clexane and giving up on warfarin .

I'm at a loss as to know why this has happened! I haven't changed anything. It's got to be our scary, weird immune systems I guess!

I do understand your worries, be pushy with you're docs and maybe see if they would let you have support doses of clexane for when you're Inr is low.

Do let us know how you're doing hon

Take care gentle hugs love Sheena xxxxx :-) :-) :-)

Thanks for the help! I really do appreciate it.

Hi

My INR went down to 1.3 three weeks ago for no apparent reason I am always on 9mg but they put it up to 12mg and now it is barely above two so I am back on 9mg. How and why does someone decide how much Warfarin you need to take?

Hi jumpingpeggy,

The Inr dosing system is computer generated, because we are all so different it varies hugely person to person, and how we eat, drink etc all affect our Inr! My nurse at Inr clinic will overrule the computer if she believes it necessary. Don't be afraid to be pushy and question the Inr clinic staff if you're not happy! Sudden jumps in dosage tend to throw my Inr totally, little tweaks are better and safer for us Hughies!

Sorry for the waffling, have brain fog! :-)

Take care gentle hugs love Sheena xxxx :-) :-) :-)

After 13 years I haven't had a lot of problems. There are times when it drops...but always rebounds. We know that it will drop in summer with my veggie garden. So it is usually increased. And you do learn what foods do to it. But that's why I asked this question here too..it has never not gone back up with my meds being increased. When do you get tested again.

Not what you're looking for?
