interpreting ejection fraction in heart functions

I had a replacement aortic valve in 2023, age 74, with a 21mm bioprosthesis, which was very successful, but has taken me these two years to regain my overall good health physically and mentally. However I remain grateful for the chance to have this done. However I have not a lot of info has been forthcoming regarding my heart health there after. Having to request the right physio to get me back to where I am now in reasonable health. There was a mention of the fact that the breathlessness may not change but not explanation as to why this might happen. Of course now I think on it, it is reasonable to expect the other heart valves to have sustained some sort of damage due to the same causation.

So on my last echo the readings were not so good with a reduced ejection faction of 46%, should I be worried? I know heart failure is coming my way but some idea of the time span of life left would be helpful in working out certain basic things in life. It’s says both atria are dilated, and all valves have leakage of some sort. I am tired most of the time but push on with life, and breathless on excretion but I just stop and then go in when it goes. My legs are moderately swollen and now don't go down after a nights sleep and my quality of life is good if a little slow now. I am now on ramipril to lower my bp as it was to high and have had one fainting attack before this was picked up. Any help with accessing theses symptoms would be gratefully received . Doreen.

I am not at all worried by this I have had a full filled life and have no fears or worries, I just would like some sort of time frame so that I can sort myself out before I go.

have a read of the NICE guidance to see if you are getting the recommended care. If not ask why. Best wishes

You should be receiving an annual Echocardiogram to monitor your symptoms. A cardiologist told me this is standard practice after surgery of the kind you have had. You may have to chase an appointment using the PALS service. Good luck.
