Monosodium Glutamate

Monosodium Glutamate has been in the controversy that it causes brain damage to sensitive persons who consume it more often. Is MSG or otherwise known as Chinese Salt (Ajinomoto) approved by NHS or any regulatory authority for sale in the UK?

Sorry I don't know but it used to be a standard ingredient to increase flavour in loads of junk food - I don't buy any now so can't tell!

Hi syednc

The Wikipedia page has information on Monosodium Glutamate that you might find helpful:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monos...

I am aware that a local Chinese restaurant where I live will prepare a meal free from monosodium glutamate (if requested) - and I haven't had any monosodium glutamate for probably about a year - as I rarely have Chinese take-aways. I am not aware of any sensitivity personally though, and I had always assumed it was 'safe' - which is what the Wikipedia article also seems to suggest.

You can buy monosodium glutamate in the U.K. it may not agree with some people, but appears to be safe, as Zest has said.

This is a good article on the subject.

In small amountsit is safe unless (as with all foods) you are at risk from it.
