Hi everyone,

I really enjoyed my lunch today - an Egg Mayo & Salad wrap with a massive Pickled Onion - it was delicious. I am also including a beautiful pink flower, which I saw last week.

Do you grown your own veg Zest? Can I recommend you plant "walking onions" this spring? They make masses of little topset onions which are just the right size for pickling. As a bonus they just keep coming back every year.

Hi TheAwfulToad

I occasionally try to grow something, but it is limited... But I will consider those onions you mentioned, as they sound interesting. Thanks for the recommendation!

Do you buy them as seeds or do you get them in bunches already to plant?

You buy them as bulbs (lots of sellers online). Stick one in the ground and it grows like shallots, producing offsets at the base that you can split off for more plants (or to eat, if you want). Once a year it'll send up at least one stalk with a half-dozen little onions at the top. Very cute. You can also eat the stems like green onions [spring onions].

Not ideal for a tiny garden because you'll probably need 15-20 plants to make a big jar of pickles, but lots of fun to grow, and virtually impossible to get wrong.

Hi Grace,

Yes the pink flowers were particularly delicate and pretty - I had to take a photo to remember them.

Your poached egg on toast and fruit sounds a particularly delicious meal. I would also love that.

Zest :-) xx
