I came across this old quarry thats now a monument to the past, I think our heritage is very interesting and I love things like this being preserved. There are rich coal seems throughout the UK and other resources as the forest was renowned for iron mining at the turn off the last century.
I haven't been out for longs walks as I hurt a tendon in my leg so am getting exercise just by being busy so just thought I'd say hello and post this. π
Sorry to hear that you've hurt a tendon in your leg. I hope you recover soon, and it's good that you're able to keep busy, despite that. This is an interesting post - with the details of the colliery. Thanks for sharing it. I thankfully don't suffer from Taphephobia.
Thanks Zest, I strained it a while ago and it flares up sometimes but its settling down thank you. I love things like this like the tin mines in Cornwall, relics of our past. π
Hi Jerry, what an interesting post. You say itβs not suitable for people with Taphephobia but of course if you did have a phobia of any kind you just had to get on with it which must have been awful. My father in law was a bevan boy and as they were chosen and not volunteers he was quite unsuitable as he hated the idea of going under ground. It was years before they were recognised for their contribution but he was very proud of his medal when he did eventually receive it.
You are lucky to have this forest on your doorstep as it seems very diverse.
(I hope your leg is getting better, what a nuisance. I know it sounds odd but olbus oil on your tendon might help. Itβs great for muscles and it really does work π)
Thanks Ali, I bet that your father in law was proud as it was wartime and mining was essential so good for him for overcoming his fears and his medal was well deserved.
And thanks for the tip about olbus oil I shall buy some at least it gives me a reason to sit in the garden and put my feet up...π
Hi Jerry, just read about freemining, it sounds interesting, but I hope any current mining is controlled to prevent environmental damage? It didnβt say about that on the website.
I was in your area last week, walking on the Welsh side at Whitestone in the Wye Valley, very beautiful though our planned walk was interrupted by a public bridle way being cut off with a chained gate (there was a stile but spindly legged greyhounds canβt climb stiles!)
Itβs a beautiful part of the country just about at the outside of my driving tolerance for a day out, and lots still to explore, I see something new every time I visit, so will definitely look out for the mine one day when Iβm with one of my sons rather than the dog!
Hi Fran, there hasn't been any mining here for ages it's now a museum now. The Wye valley is very pretty so I'm glad that you enjoyed your day out, I think its very unfair when bridle ways are locked.
I love the forest so am glad that so many others do too so you never know you might bump into me one day. π
