Anyone want to share their story?

Hey everyone,

I had my TBI 4 years ago and have since gone on to do well with my recovery.

I have started to volunteer at a local brain injury rehabilitation ward to give back to the community and would like to show these patients that there is hope out there and so that they can see other people’s journeys.

Would anyone like to share their story with me please? Which I can then upload onto a Facebook group that these patients and their families can look at. I could keep your information private so no names etc would need to be used.

If anyone would like to share their story either send me a message on here or email me on

info@neurobuds.co.uk

hopefully hear from you soon thanks!

Hi Dj, it is great that you are helping at the hospital. I had encephalitis in 1975, am now 56, back then there wasn't as much information or knowledge or support regarding brain injury as there is now, we have come a long way since then. Even though my brain injury left me visually impaired, in a wheelchair with a lot of other health problems, some of which I didn't know about until recently, it is important to stay positive, cheerful as best we can and try and do as much for ourselves as we can, it helps to keep busy. I live on my own in a supported living facility in Devon, having my independence is very important to me. I have carers who come in several times a day but try and do as much for myself as I can, my carers only help me with the things I need help with or that I know I cannot do for myself. I spend a lot of time on my computers, listening to audio books and listening to my music as well as other hobbies and interests. Believe me, living with a brain injury hasn't been easy, as you get older, the brain does repair itself to a point, but its all the other stuff we have to deal with which makes it much harder. I am a member of headway, hence being on this group and it is a great organisation. I am happy to talk to you if you want, its important to show that things do get better even though it can take a long time. Good luck and keep up the good work. You can contact me by sending a message. Take care.

Ok Dj, it depends on circumstances and what the other person is dealing with, each case is different obviously. If you want to ask me any questions, if I can help at all, feel free.

Yeah that’s the problems with brain injuries is that everyone is so different. That’s part of why I’m trying to get lots of stories so that hopefully a person can relate to one of the stories :)

Will do thanks!

hi like you I had my TBI 4 years ago ago and have also done volunteer work with the stroke group . I enjoyed doing this as I was a mental health support worker pre accident which I enjoyed doing very much but I thought then I wouldnt ever get back to .. 4 years later that hasn’t changed .. I stopped doing volunteer work as I had hoped to get back to doing some hairdressing again as I was hairdressing for 30+ years .. all I thought was after having both shoulders operated on I would be able to do this .. and I was able to do more with my arms but then realised that my new wonky brain couldn’t work doing things with my hands , noises and reading instructions plus talking got worse and I stuttered more and word finding was a nightmare .. lucky I was only doing friends hair when I mixed up a home bought colour and although I thought the texture of the colour mix was different i didn’t realise that I had mixed the wrong tubes ..🥴 something I could do with my eyes closed pre accident .. didn’t affect my friends hair and the only casualty was me when I again picked up the wrong colour and dyed my roots orange and I’m blonde . I only had 2 colours to chose from and the old me would have 100 colours in the salon and never get a colour wrong .. I am now on ESA and this last year had been dealing with the denial of my injuries which has been hell but I’m being to accept this new me .. I still get moments of great sadness that I can’t me more like I was but I am feeling better than I was 12 months ago .. it has been a rollercoaster the last 4 years .. moon and bust , depression and anxiety, but I never gave up and still won’t .. I’ve improved way more than I thought I would and this came from not giving up , doing things repeatedly until I could do it , using timers and notes , a diary permanently by my side ( its called my brain 😊) I’ve recently joined a choir with my friend and hi lighted the words so they stand out .. I love the singing but often have no idea where we are 😂 and dislike the time before as people are talking (all of them🥴) and I can’t keep up with what’s being said or find it difficult to find the moment that I should speak and start to stutter .. I’m leaning to smile and nod and speak very little . This is my way of dining something I like and dealt with the side I don’t like .. singing nursery rhymes with my granddaughter was ok as I didn’t stammer while singing 😊 .. oh my this could just go on and on the text but to the people you support tell them never give up , keep trying things that are difficult as you may just find a new way of dealing with with something that is impossible at the beginning Sue 🙂

That sounds like a great idea to me. My name is Lucy and I had a TBI 16 years ago. I've actually opened an Instagram page recently to talk about my TBI and you're welcome to use it if you're interested. It's instagram.com/i_had_tbi_2008/

Thats brilliant, I myself had a brain injury almost 4 years ago(May 29th 2021)and I feel I am coming to the end of a dark tunnel I was in but my problem is my family do not let me forget it!For example if I sound off about something or not happy about something they say its because of the injury I acquired, I reckon they have been googling too much about it, and TBI is so diverse and so different for everybody, I was lucky, I had no intervention except for occupational therapists and of course a DVLA driving assessment which I got through well. The left side of my body was affected by the bleed on the right but I'm slowly coming back to normal, which is a godsend,I would love to be able to help others with brain injuries because we have been through it and could help in some way.Its what I Looked for when it happened to me, basically why I joined this site. Also I was learning to be a triathlete at the time and I am determined to get back to that, I can jog and swim(not as fast as I was)but not ready yet for my bike ie(I came off my bike pretty hard )
