Reduce the stress?

Recently had 2 year anniversary of my brain injury so probably still short term in life cycle of recovery. Sorry for late message but needed to get some thoughts down.

I managed to return to work and do 20 hours a week. Been stressful year with family illness, a burglary and couple of deaths of family and friend. So at exhausted level already.

Now work have sprung a restructure on us, hence lack of sleep tonight. Any ideas on managing stress in general and also on dealing with work changes please? Also when does a restructure process become a redundancy process?

hi Nemo

Pacing is necessary, at work and at home.

Log all the tasks you do and ones you are asked to do that you can't. Your employer has a duty to accommodate but that doesn't mean they don't have a motive to show you the door.

Write things down and make yourself a procedure manual to follow, document like crazy. The screen print key and pasting into a word processor is definitely your friend.

It's best to talk to someone legal who can tell you what to document, what to ask when, etc. After the fact is often too late.

Often other people at work think people with challenges belong in disability and have no idea what a financial disaster that is, or maybe don't care. It's an unfortunate truth that HR often sees disabled people or ones they must accommodate for as liabilities and there is a lot of bias out there, especially if they think you won't improve - and yes at 2 years you are still in healing mode.

Best of luck to you

Hello Nemo

Pacing as Leaf says is so important. Your employer should make allowances to make sure your needs are met. For example maybe working in a quieter area if possible, taking regular short breaks , if you use the computer a lot having a filter on the screen etc You will have an idea what might work for you.

Restructuring often looks like redundancy - a conversation with Citizens Advice would probably be helpful. You could also try ACAS. It’s a complex subject - they would need to know a little about your employer and your current role and the restructuring proposal before giving any advice. Your right, it’s very stressful which is not what you need. Getting some advice might help. Good luck
