Hi

Has anyone here tried Hypnosis to try and get some pain relief? I’ve been thinking of all sorts to try and help my 21 year old to try and get some relief from the alful head pain he deals with every single day for the last 8 years . He had a brain abscess when he was 13 years old and after having two craniotomys to get rid of the abscess which has gone his just now left with chronic head pain !!

Sorry Harry's mum ; it seems no one here has experience of hypnosis. I wasn't going to reply as both my experiences with hypnotherapists were negative, but I changed my mind to offer some words of caution.

The first session simply didn't work, despite my following suggestions faithfully and wanting it to work, but the practitioner explained that some people simply don't respond and he was sorry if I was disappointed.

The second hypnotherapist was shocking in many ways. Firstly he was abrupt and spoke in a commanding tone rather than a calming one. Secondly he had a window open wide, so the noise of building work outside made relaxation impossible and after 'telling' me I was in a deep sleep he left the room closing the door noisily, then I heard him next door flushing a toilet before returning.

He was irritated on finding I was wide awake and told me my inability to succumb was down to lack of intelligence. I knew this just wasn't right, and when a couple of months later my mother asked "What was his name again ?" and I told her, she showed me an article in the Manchester Evening News telling how he'd been struck off for defrauding wealthy patients.

Dr. Jaffe was his name, and I later realized he'd been dismissive and rude as I was claiming sickness benefit.......so of no value ! My GP was sickened when the case hit the headlines as he'd recommended this 'esteemed' practitioner.

I guess I was just unlucky but, if you decide to go ahead, please do make sure you get referrals from knowledgeable sources and look for appraisals on reputable sites.

Hope you find effective therapy for Harry ; all the best, Cat x

PS.. have you thought of acupuncture ? .. and have you asked the Headway team for advice on hypnotherapists ?

Hi thank you for responding, I haven’t done any research yet it was just a thought that popped into my head yesterday. Harry has some good news yesterday ,his going to have the new injection for migraine Ajovy. Hopefully in the next 4 weeks it’s had amazing results for lots of people so fingers crossed. He did try on acupuncture on the nhs it didn’t work but the young girl who was doing it wasn’t very good the needles kept popping out and some weeks she couldn’t get the needles in .
