I have lost my taste and smell..
Doctors have run out of ideas I have seen ENT Neurology RA consultants and have had a brain scan.
They are putting it down to medication but cannot say more than that!
They have basically told me I have to live with it.
Hi, your now medically classed as anosmic, I also lost my taste and smell due to a severe head injury, over ten years ago. Life seems a little plastic I guess without those senses. For me it’s the loss of smell I miss most it’s that, that causes the biggest sense of loss to me.

So sorry to hear you are experiencing this. I temporarily lost my sense of taste in 2016 when I had a stroke mimic. I can't recall when it returned and it was gradual. But now back to normal. Hopefully it'll be the same for you.
No stroke .. had brain scan everything and all come back normal

and it was not medication that causesit i say that ive just been telling people for years and years to the point ive ate an onion hottest pepers sause i mean extremely hot to my daughter as proof and have never been told why only for are angels on the our contact
line who have said its a part of head injury there are many family members who have lost sences god i miss the taste of chocolate you no that feeling when you havnt had any for days
and you get ou favourites and your whole body tastes it its lovely and all your body feels good all i taste like overdone spaghetti gone dry anyway hope yours comes back love hug eddie x
How long have you been anosmic?
If it has been caused by a non traumatic event, it might still resolve. Anosmia caused by viruses, medication side effects or an unknown cause is more likely to resolve than anosmia caused by traumatic brain injury.
Mine was caused by a severe traumatic brain injury whereby my brain slammed into the front of my skull, in the process my olfactory bulb and associated nerves were destroyed. It is very unlikely that my sense of smell/taste will return to normal. It has been almost 6 years now and I grieve the loss greatly. However I am very lucky to be alive and I can live very well with my anosmia, it’s actually the least serious complication arising from my brain injury.
I still hold out hope that one day I might be able to smell again. Don’t lose hope 💗
Hi, I read your comment that you haven't had a head trauma and wanted to say that sometimes loss of taste and smell can be caused by viral infection as Broken Doll says. It is possible that the vestibular system was affected and even minute damage in the inner ear can cause all kind of issues with the eys, balance and the senses of taste and smell.
I know a number of people who also have no head trauma as well as those who do who have had these problems resolved with acupuncture. Might be worth a try?
My own anosmia gradually sorted itself out.
They say they have explored every avenue.. nothing on the brain scan and even camera up the nose etc.
I have now asked my Doctor to refer me to a specialist clinic.

You might have to accept that you might never know the cause. Doctors aren’t generally interested (unless you pay them) as very little is known about anosmia and it’s causes, especially when they are unrelated to a brain injury and when related to brain injury, Neurosurgeons and Neurologists don’t see it as an “essential sense” like vision, hearing etc.
My post-TBI smell and taste is just mostly gone.
