Christmas : I’m not looking forward to Christmas as... - Headway
Christmas
Me neither. Only got out of hospital on Wednesday and can't seem to get in to the Christmas mood. Xx
Even with family around brain injury can cause a feeling of 'separateness' from Xmas festivity, partly from fatigue and partly from dampening of emotions. But I try to see it as just like any other day, although one which does demand a higher level of enthusiasm and animation.
I have no religion but sometimes envy those who do, for their community spirit. Forgive my ignorance of denominations, but my friend and I were passing a church one Sunday in a neighbouring town to the sound of 'Praise the Lord' and the most amazing singing voices, so we stood listening outside in absolute wonder. The congregation which piled out were Black African and one lady in stunning coloured attire told us we "Should've come inside and felt the love" !
I'll never forget the atmosphere of inclusiveness, and the joyousness on the faces of that community !
I've digressed, but my kids were 1970s generation where 'Santa' roamed suburban streets in a mock sleigh accompanied by a full choir, and neighbours young & old came out of their houses and joined in with carols...……….everyone welcome !
Thinking of all those alone at Christmas. Love Cat x
I’ve just read your bio; what an awful accident followed by terrible injuries and surgery. You’ve had the most traumatic year and your brain and body are most definitely still in the early stages of recovery. Christmas can be an emotional time at the best of times, never mind after what you’ve been through. I hope that you have a supportive family but I know that, even when they are, they will still have their needs on Christmas Day.
I remember once hearing Dawn French say that she used to take herself away and get into her bath, just an empty bath, to grab a few moments to herself, and that she could have several ‘baths’ a day. Whatever works for you, regularly take a few moments to rebuild your reserves and treat yourself gently.
You have done so well to get where you are today and I wish you a very happy Christmas
