I am after some understanding on this subject. Twice my partner has had the catheter removed and twice its been put back, due to retaining urine and then getting an infection. Now the nurse has said, there is talk of him possibly having a tube put straight into his bladder, just above the pubic bone. This is a long term solution. What I am asking is, has anyone had that done, then in the future, still been able to have it removed and control returning to the bladder in the normal way?

No form of catheterisation is permanent, so could be removed if not needed/wanted, fairly easily.
My experience is with folks that it tends to be as they decline i.e. Parkinson's and so on. But people do recover functions after a brain injury, so it's possible?
Thanks Roger, it worried me that the medical team were going to consider this, more for their convenience and I was concerned he would lose the control and need it permanent. What I need to do, is try to speak to his consultant.
Be sure to have ultrasound done in his bladder regularly as urinary retention is not good. I was hospitalized for four days with a UTI, but fortunately everything returned to normal. I had my catheter in for nearly two weeks and there were no ill effects.
