One week after any type of brain injury is too soon to tell what the outcome might be. Even the doctors will be reluctant to offer a prognosis at such an early stage.

Please accept my sincere best wishes for your father's good progress. Try to stay strong and make your presence known to him when you visit ; he will be aware of it even though he may appear unresponsive.

The keyword is 'patience' for now as it may be many weeks before you will see positive signs, but people can and do come through this.

Regards, Cat x

Oh dear. I really hope it goes well, but it is far too early to know for sure. I had a traumatic brain injury, in 2005. Apparently, I stopped breathing for a while, as well. I spent weeks in a coma, 8 months in hospital, and 18 months off work. But I did improve, and I am still improving, 10 years later. Admittedly, it is very slow improvement, but...

You won't know for a while how he will recover, I am afraid.

I really hope he recovers OK.

I know hearing "its to soon to tell" isn't what you want to hear right now, however myvhusband had SCA and was down about 4-5 mins. He seemed "normal" after a week spent in the hospital. It wasn't until 5 weeks out that he actually started showing any signs of hypoxia. Some days are better than others. There isn't a lot of information out there because there aren't a lot of people who live.

The good news is your dads alive. :)

Take it one day at a time and be patient.

Don't go looking for "what ifs or could be's" because plenty will find you.

The hardest thing for me through this whole thing is when the doctor said "your husband will never be the same". I'm learning to live with that and realize it's okay that he isn't the same. he still loves me and our boys and your dad will still love you! Just be there for him!

Saying a special prayer for your family!

My partner suffered a hypoxic brain injury in very similar circumstances. As I discovered, nobody will be able to predict an outcome. They say the first year is the telling time. We are two and a half years in now, so pretty much know how things will be, but I have seen many different outcomes, mostly positive. No two people are alike in their recovery it seems, but do feel free to pm me if you need an ear.
