Is it normal after a sah and vp shunt to have niggly headaches that won't go even with strong painkillers?

After your recent ordeal I would be surprised if you weren't having pain/discomfort. I had a SAH two years ago and the headaches lasted for several weeks with no relief from pain killers. But at the time, the neurosurgeon explained that the healing process is a lengthy one and that the accompanying sensations are 'various' but do include pain/ tingling and dragging sensations/ head noises..........amongst other things.

I was taking Codeine but the consultant stopped it after six weeks, suspecting it was having counter effects. And he was right; things improved without them and I was discharged a couple of weeks later. I do still use codeine/paracetamol but not for long periods.

You're probably tired of hearing that it's 'early days' but it really is charlii. In terms of recovery........especially considering the extra surgery for the shunt.........there is lots more healing to take place. You will need lots of patience, rest, fluids and calmness if you want to aid your progress and preferably no alcohol.

i had a sah i suffer with terrible heaches it is normal to get them i got to see a lady doc who just did headaches she told me no pain killers would help me as ive got sah hole stroke and bad fall 2 weeks before sah 3 holes to fill in head she did say pure oxegen may help as i got cluster headaches 2 , but sah oxegen works better than any pain killer i take pain killers all time waste time a sweet do as good so id say yes is after your sah
