craigyrose,

Welcome to the forum.

I don't have Crohns disease but have haemochromotosis and was advised of only slight changes in diet.

Avoid alcohol/Vit C (orange juice) with meals as it increases iron absorption. Avoid blackstrap molasses, which is a rich source of iron & beware of multi-vits that may contain iron.

Eat less red meats & avoid raw shellfish as people with haemochromatosis are more vulnerable to infections caused by bacteria that may be present in raw shellfish.

Drinking the tannins in coffee/tea with meals will help decrease iron absorption. Also eggs, fiber & calcium decreases iron absorption.

Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, grains, rice, and beans which although contain small amounts of iron, it is non-heme which is more difficult to absorb than heme iron. Lots of these foods also contain oxalates that actually inhibit iron absorption.
