The pill is a common form of hormonal contraception that is over 99% effective when taken correctly.

There are many reasons why people choose to take the pill, but the most common is to prevent pregnancy.

But how exactly does the pill stop someone from getting pregnant?

1. Stops the ovaries from releasing an egg each month (ovulation)

2. Thickens the cervical mucus, which makes it difficult for sperm to get into the womb

3. Thins the womb lining, so if there is a fertilised egg, it’s less likely to implant into the womb

Any questions about the pill and gynae health, our Ask Eve team are here to help. Email nurse@eveappeal.org.uk and our gynae nurse will get back to you.
