Hope not...think bowel cancer was a danger but OK if stick to gluten free intake. Otherwise same as any other condition, you get it or you dont. How come you ask any special reason.

My gastroenterologist told me that it was important to have my annual bowel assessment because there is a direct connection between a number of cancers and Celiac disease. I didn't ask for specifics ... I no longer eat any gluten.I do have the annual bowel assessment done though.

I've read about this from various sources. The increased risk of bowel cancer is often listed as one of the problems caused by untreated coeliac disease. I even read somewhere that the link between bowel cancer and coeliac disease was only a possibility.

I don't know, but it seems like there are no statistics.

Does anyone else here know of any?

I don't get an 'annual assessment', but I do get those little self test kits from the NHS through the post, which are a check for traces of blood.

Here is a link from the Cancer Research UK site:

Small bowel cancer is very uncommon, so an increased rate of this for people with coeliac disease, will still be a very low percentage of people.

I also read somewhere that the risk is higher for people with untreated coeliac disease.

Thanks the only reason I asked was the doc said to have an annual bowel assessment and I was wondering the connection. Thanks suzth for the link. Ben88

Is there a connection?.....in our case Yes!.....my wife who is 52 has had problems all her life with IBS????......she had a well women health check 2 years ago..the Dr told her she was fat and put her on a diet..and into Fat clinic...she also had a range of blood test..(which saved her life) ..and Coeliacs was suggested as a possible cause?..to diagnose Coeliacs she needed an endoscopy...which did confirm Coeliacs...but! also found cancer in the lower bowel..the gastroenterologist stated that it was 'probably' caused through her undiagnosed Coeliacs disease, which! as everyone knows your born with?.....so in our case there is a big connection....thankfully after treatment for the Cancer and getting her diet sorted things are Good!..but! all blood relatives, the Children, Grandchildren, her parents and siblings have all now had blood tests for Coeliacs?

Any idea if post menoposal bleed could be connected. exspect it is only possible in the digestive system. Time will tell. already had loss from bowel, not now..not heamorhoids. Failed colonoscopy, reluctant to have virtual test just yet, wanted to recover from colonoscopy first. as sedation had no effect...tough.
