There have been several discussions on coffee, if you type in the top right hand box you will find past posts. Personally I have no problem with proper filter coffee, but the instant stuff does not suit me. Bear in mind that coffee is a stimulant and it can stimulate your bowels!

Hi Ewenice, yes, to my dismay I (have Dermatitis Herpetiformis) found that after going gluten free I was still getting symptoms and when I cut out coffee they virtually vanished. I really miss coffee (was never a heavy drinker but always enjoyed a cup of homemade filter coffee in the morning). Every now and then I sneak a tiny cup of homemade filter coffee or even a cappucino out somewhere and although I feel fine at the time always get the reaction later. It frustrates me but I know my body reacts to coffee as though it were gluten. Sigh.

I have no hassle with coffee....thank god as a costa and a gf brownie is one of my rare treats I would be sad to give it....cos it's nice just to be able to order a coffee and cake like every body else......

Hi Janie, Costa's brownies are really nice so agree with you on that one, I don't get on with coffee but like tea so that's OK.

And I notice that Sainsbury's cafe's sell gf brownies I haven't tried them yet but will no doubt.

I also think that you highlight an advantage of being a coeliac here with a chocolate brownie and a coffee being a rare treat so being a coeliac can make us appreciate things that others take for granted.

I don't have a gluten like reaction to coffee it just doesn't agree with me in answer to the original question.

I have written about cross reactivity and gluten sensitivity on my blog advancenutrition.co.uk/site... and as a nutritionist I do see many CD clients who cross react with many other foods including coffee and non gluten grains

Cyrex laboratory testing have a panel (blood test) which looks at cross reactivity from a range of foods with gluten and you may wish to consider undertaking this test. Interestingly Cyrex labs have found it is only instant coffee that causes the cross reaction - so filter may be ok although of course it can disrupt blood sugar levels being a stimulant. It is possible of course that someone is antigen-sensitive to coffee or genetically sensitive to coffee (jama.jamanetwork.com/articl.... but in terms of cross-reactivity, at this point, what has been demonstrated in the laboratory setting, is a cross-reactivity with Instant Coffee.

Hope this helps

Hi all

When myj multiple intolerances were first diagnosed, i did not have coffee for over ten years. However when pregnant with my youngest (now 15) i had such a craving, i had organic ground with soya. In my own filter pot. I have carried on with this, now have 2 mugs a day. Costa i am ok with but have a weak americano with cream or soya, still cant tolerate milk in coffee. I found when my gut was so sore anything citrus, onions, coffee upset it badly. Can now tolerate all of those after 26 years. Strong coffee will still give me bad indigestion.

Good to hear I am not the only one.!.

I can tolerate some coffees, but Costa leaves my stomach sour, so there is no way I would drink it. Starbucks seems ok, and, after writing to them, they told me the only coffee I could not have was one containing a syrup with honey in it...all the other syrups are GF.

I have experiences reactions, when I know I have not had gluten, but I don't know if it was cross-reactivity. I have many food reactions e.g. hens eggs, chicken, mushrooms...etc, etc. so nothing would surprise me.
