Dominos USA launch a gluten free pizza - but it isn’t suitable for Coeliacs.

That’s right. It sounds like a contradiction - Dominos have gone to all the trouble of creating a gluten free pizza but err you know the people who would really appreciate it - us Coeliacs - well - we can’t eat it. Confused?

OK here’s what you need to know..from Dominos…

1) Although the Gluten Free Crust is certified to be free of gluten, the pizzas made with the Gluten Free Crust use the same ingredients and utensils as all of our other pizzas.

2) The ingredients in the Gluten Free Crust are: Water, Rice Flour, Rice Starch, Potato Starch, Olive Oil, Evaporated Cane Juice, Tapioca Flour, Potato Flour, Fresh Yeast, Avicel, Salt, Calcium Propionate.

3) The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness observed Domino’s® operations and worked closely with management to better educate Domino’s® on the difference between celiac disease and gluten sensitivity

The NFCA supports Domino’s® efforts to provide a Gluten Free Crust to a national audience and has given Domino’s® a “Gluten Free Ingredients” rating. The NFCA granted Domino’s® this rating because of our verified ingredients, consumer education approach and customer service training. This means the NFCA and Domino’s® do not recommend this pizza for people with celiac disease. However, because the risk for gluten exposure is low, this product may be an option for those with mild gluten sensitivities.

4)Domino’s® worked closely with the NFCA and recognizes that with our current operational model we cannot, beyond all doubt, provide the environment needed to assure those with celiac disease that the whole pizza is 100 percent gluten free.

5) Domino’s® would rather be honest and transparent about this product and avoid risking a customer ordering this product under false pretenses. Domino’s® includes its Gluten Free Crust disclaimer in store, online, in all advertising and on all pizza boxes

A) It’s a great start making gluten free options - maybe one day they’ll be suitable for coeliacs

B) Just another company jumping on the Coeliac bandwagon to make more £$$

C) It’s stupid. We should give up replicating ‘normal’ gluten food and just accept that being coeliacs mean we miss out on fast food - which isn’t healthy anyway. Who cares. Pass me a rice cake instead!

D) So what I’d eat it anyway - I miss pizza so much

Who knows - maybe they will work to avoid cross contamination and we’ll all be able to eat GF pizza?

What a waste of time, money and energy. If Pizza, Pizza can do it here in Canada I see no reason at all why Domino's can't do it in the US. So close and yet so far! Such a shame they didn't go the extra mile and do it right.

It's definitely a case of false labelling. This pizza is 'low-gluten' if such a category exists. It is NOT 'gluten free' no by any stretch if the imagination. Why not just call it 'low-gluten' pizza, thereby catering for 'faddists' who believe they gain some benefit from eating a 'low-gluten' diet? I'm sure there are enough of them out there! This whole thing smacks of profit and is only muddying the waters where genuine coeliac/gluten intolerance is concerned. It's really rather irritating.

Wellfoods supplies several Pizza houses in UK..with certified g/f Pizza bases...and know of clcients that will drive 50 miles to collect a pizza.

It can be done...its a matter of willingness to address the market place...

Sorry if this is an advert..its not meant to be...just that I feel that we are being given something good...and having it snatched away again....

If a major chain here introduced gluten free pizza (after all many of us crave it) what would satisfy your concerns (esp ref cross contamination) and encourage you to actually eat it? i.e. if it were still created in a kitchen where non-gf items were created.

Feedback from our facebook page on this Domino example varies from people saying it's fine as they have a mixed GF and non-GF kitchen at home to they'd never eat a GF item if it was produced in a normal kitchen. Is there ever a happy medium? Will mainstream producers ever be able to cater for coeliacs healthily?

I would love to be able to offer this guy some chocolate fireguards, glass hammers, punctured liferafts and transparent sunshades.

His smarmy attitude is sickening.

The pizzas are gluten free but you have to take a gamble. "C'mon punk, contaminated or not? Make my day" , as Dirty Harry Domino would maybe say.

There is enough conflicting information in the world already for Coeliacs. Domino has just topped the lot, with extra anchovies and mushrooms.

We don't need any more 'fuzzy advice.'

Pizza isn't a health food, but when you're on the go, miles from home, stranded in an airport, without your emergency GF bread roll in your pocket, a genuinely GF pizza would be manna from heaven.

What's the point?! If they're actually wanting to cater for coeliacs then ACTUALLY cater for them by making the environment, utensils and cooking equipment gluten free. If Dough Pizza-Kitchen in Manchester (UK) can do it then they can too. It is lazy and irresponsible to say 'we now offer a gluten free crust', when it comes with so many potential risks and can cause damage to a coeliac's health, as a result of their insensitivity for people with the condition. I prefer my food without a disclaimer and will not run the risk of being ill just for the sake of eating their pizzas....

Ok has anbody ever tried to eat a gluten free pizza from dominoes? If you ever have you will note that the cardboard box has more flavour.

Honestly dominoes do have a gluten free pizza in Australia with total gluten free ingrdients. However the rings they use to keep the ingredients on are used for all types of pizza. Contamination? You bet big time.

I will continue to make my yummy homemade ones using a great thin base. Come to think of it I might have one now.

Whaaa, I want the recipe! My son had just perfected the worlds best pittza when i was diagnosed. The ones I have made/tried to eat, since have been cardboard at best!.

Hi Morningstar. I tried for a few years to make a base however they were either to sticky to use or baked like cardboard.

Then I found a base in the supermarket and now use these all the time.

I make pizza most Saturdays and my family like my gf pizza better than their own normal one. Really easy I use 10oz Glutafin mix, one egg and a small tub of natural yoghurt, pinch of salt and that is it. Bring it together and roll it out with plenty of flour. Top it off with your favourite filling and bake for 12 - 15 mins.at 200 c. I often bake more than one and freeze them in two halves, but it is nicer freshly baked. Go on - try it I dare you !

Thanks guys, I love pizza but have not been able to make base at all. here is one for you, i have just tried an Antoinette Savill Gluten Free loaf that i got from Ocado online shopping. It is lovely and spongy and tastes great- a bit like American cornbread. I had not tried online shopping before but was pleased as it has a filter on the right side for allergens. So i could put in 'meat' in the main search, then gluten free and wheat free and it would bring up the products that it was safe for me to have. It was a great relief, I have been off ill from work for a month and couldn't be bothered with the fuss of reading labels
