Gluten Free on my doorstep.

When I was first diagnosed around 15/16 years ago there was prescription food but no free from sections and being a coeliac was considered rare. I was in my early 40's and was a single dad with a full time job and a teenage son so I didnt have as much time as I would have liked to prepare food after work so I used to go to several supermarkets to buy various gf foods. I live less then 2 miles from Bristol city centre so this was easy but time consuming. I then had an operation on my knee and I couldnt drive for over a month so I arranged with friends to give me lifts but getting in and out of cars was so painful once was enough. I walked so slowly pensioners with their shopping trolleys whizzed past me so I had time to check out what was available on my door step. I can now buy all my food on my door step.

I buy 1.5Kg bags of rice flour from an Asian corner shop I also buy gari there (coarse tapioca starch) they also sell an amazing selection of spices. There is a Vietnemese supermarket across the rd from them and they sell rice flour and a fine tapioca starch they also sell many rice and tapioca noodles much more than the free from sections and they sell rice papers for spring rolls which are made with rice and tapioca. Further down the Glos.rd is a lovelly shop called La Ruca they sell whole foods and a small selection of gf foods and they make falafels which are made with chick pea flour and are gf. They have a cafe up stairs and do a gluten free lunch everyday they sell a gf vegan full English breakfast. I went into the cafe as they had some gf apricot slices and when I asked for one I was asked was I a coeliac? and they went out the back and brought a plate of apricot slices all individually wrapped in cling film to keep them from cross contamination.

I said to my local butcher (Daltons) that he ought to consider making gf sausages he replied we do mate and we freeze them straight away so we always have some.

What is lacking is something that alerts the coeliac to these places which's why I am so keen on a gf friendly sign for shop/cafe windows.

Well said Jerry

Our local butcher sells all sorts of sausages. A few months back I asked him if they were gluten free. He answered that ALL his sausages were gluten free as it is easier to use gluten free flour in manufacturing the snags.

He said wheat flour sets like concrete and it is hard to clean the equipment.

My local supermarket Woolies only sell gluten free snags. But having a simple sign would be great.
