I am wondering if the taste is associated with the breath that happens as you loose weight. it is something to do with Ketosis. Eliminating the gluten could be affecting your metabolism. I don't remember getting a bad taste in my mouth after I went gluten free. My side effect was feeling a lot better, and started losing weight slowly.

What Fidgetsmum said.

Or maybe you are eating pre-prepared GF foods that contain unfamiliar preservatives, xanthan gum, palm oil etc (as indeed do many non GF processed foods) some of which have a pretty disgusting "mouth feel" as well as tasting different to your non GF previous purchases.

Thank you fidgestmum I mainly eat homemade ordinary meals that are naturally GF free.but have been trying some readymade stuff too .like trumpets cake biscuits, not much just one or two biscuits or a small bit of cake.and various GF breads.I'm not a celiac I have thyroid disease and hoped GF would help me feel better.could the taste be something to do with toxins leaving my body?

Have you had your vitamin B12 tested? Low B12 can cause issues with the tongue and leads to a metallic taste in everything

Pet lamb what does the taste resemble ? You can get a salty taste with low b12 and also if you are not on enough meds . I have had a very severe altered taste for a few years now .I have seen a few specialists but all they can come up with is Burning mouth syndrome,my mouth rarely burns. I also am Hypot but have recently been diagnosed with Cerebellar atrophy caused by Gluten . During my research I have found there are several vitamin deficiencies that cause altered taste . Maybe get your GP to check the obvious ones . How old are you ? Menopause also seems to be another reason for altered taste . Hope you find answers .

Hello motherelle, not vitamin b problem. age,64 taste only seemed to start when I began gluten free diet, can't describe the taste really it's not metallic.I've checked on burning mouth symptoms it's not that, lips and mouth taste ? sort of sour, tongue is coated but not all the time bowel movements have increased and improved since starting gluten free as has bloating.oh. and not on any meds I'm not diagnosed as Coeliac, but have hashimotos thyroid disease, not receiving treatment yet.

Yes I get the sour taste too ! I have seen a specialist and he is stumped ..Hes been studying BM for 25 years .They just call mine BM because they have no idea .You haven't changed your brand of Thyroxine have you ? The trouble is with things like this it could all be coincidence ,that it started same time as you went Gluten free .mine hasn't changed at all since being GF .Mrs Spinkrat had the same problem but hers improved when she got her Thyroid meds optimum .

The other thing is a percentage of Celiacs will have issues with the Geographic Tongue and may not even be aware they have one. My sister and I both do and neither of us knew for years it was related.
