Any advices on places to eat in Windsor? Or to order in UK? I am a foreigner going next week on business and will be staying in a hotel...

I am going from Portugal to UK on work and will be staying for around 3 months.

I know that in the UK in general access and diversity of GF food is better but was looking for any specific info on the area that I will be staying and working:Peascod Street Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 1DN

Local restaurants, supermarkets,etc.. that can be valuable for a coeliac?

Any info or general advices will be greatly appreciated as I have no specific info on the products available in the UK other than what I usually order from amazon. Good and reasonably priced bread,etc...

Thank you in advance,

Sergio

Sainsburys and Tesco's do a good gluten free range if you want to make your own packed lunch etc.

All the major British supermarkets have a freefrom range which includes the gluten free food items. They will also sell all the raw products if you can cook for yourself at all .

Often, in south east England, sit-in and takeaway restaurants, especially Indian and Chinese, are helpful. Find it is wise to say that you have coeliac and see what the response is. If they say that their menu or items are gluten free then they will usually discuss what you order. Pizza Express have a definite GF policy and I think there is a branch in Windsor, and also Wagamama.

If you are in one hotel for the 3 months, perhaps it is worth getting the hotel to get supplies of basic foods and teach them how to cater for someone avoiding all gluten.

I hope you enjoy Windsor.

I don't really know Windsor but it seems to have branches of Carluccio's and Gourmet Burger King, both of which I've had good experiences with elsewhere and both of which have special GF menus. Marks & Spencer's sausages are gluten free (check labels as they may not all be) and good!

There is a Lidl in Thames Street, Windsor. Good for snacks - not just nuts and fruit (and some of their cheap own brand chocolate and sweets are GF) but also small packs of antipasti, prawns etc. I don't think they do a GF bread.

Marks & Spencer do the best GF bread in my opinion, however their GF readymade sandwiches are horrible. They manage to be dry and soggy at the same time.

Carluccio's has GF pasta and generally good understanding, and from experience the Windsor branch is a good one.

Sainsbury's is usually good for GF food, and you should find both Genius and Newburn Bakehouse (Warburton's) bread available.

I visited Windsor recently and Real Eat have GF soups to take away or eat on the premises. They consult their book on whether products are GF. Don't be scared to ask they were brilliant about responding.

Sergio, Have a look at coeliacmap.com as well. You will find local coeliac's recommendations for eating out on the map.

How is eating gluten free in Portugal? I am off on holiday there in the summer, staying in a villa with family, so I think we will do a combination of eating in and out.

It really depends on the place you stay(Lisbon has quite a few more choices than Algarve) but on the other hand bring Algarve a tourist destination(such as Madeira, where I live), their hotels and restaurants are much more used to dealing with special requests and have more training than a "local restaurant for local people" if you understand what I mean.

Big chains with gluten free options are very rare: mcdonalds, pizzahut,....none of them have decent options here. For example, there is a portuguese gourmet burger chain that is present in most shoppings that has a few good options: H2O. In shoppings that is pretty much the only safe option to eat something decent.

Supermarkets do not have many options but the chain Continente has their own gluten free line that recently has add quite a few aditions and is rather complete but really depends on which store you go to.

Schar bread and other products are also common in the bigger supermarket chains: Pingo Doce, Continente,...

I think it shouldn´t be difficult to find some things but when you do buy more than you need because it may not be very acessible where you will be staying.

Have a great time and if you need something else let me know: sergiobfgomes@gmail.com

Hi, I live in Berkshire but I don't know of any GF places to eat in Windsor. However, if it helps any, I've found a good GF bread called "Love Life" that you can buy from Waitrose supermarkets. They also have quite a decent range of GF foods too.

Eating out: if you can find a Bella Italia (Italian), they have a separate GF menu (from their standard one) which is pretty good. Also, Pizza Express do GF pizza etc.

Hope this helps!
