After a panic stricken week during which DVLA led me to believe my driving licence had been been revoked, they have now emailed me and said that this was a mistake and I will be allowed to drive under medical licence. I haven’t received the actual paperwork yet, but have been told I will need to send my old licence back before they will issue the medical one. Can I continue to drive in the meantime?

Can I drive while waiting for my medical licence ?
Hello. I wouldn't be able to say with confidence that you could resume driving again, without the arrival of your new licence. This is something you would need to check with the DVLA.
I was told as long as you have applied for the licence which they are sending you can drive, you do not have to have the physical licence. But if you have not been told that they are SENDING it tgen best to check. My physical licence took weeks to arrive but I had a letter saying I had been granted a short term one year licence so could carry on driving.
This is indeed a weird one! A search confirms that there is no separate thing as a medical licence. Just a normal licence with either a shorter term than usual or a restriction on the types of vehicles you can drive. I wonder if your existing licence permits bus driving? I've not heard of a DVLA field test result causing a limitation of vehicle class. Nor of a "warning" letter of the type you report. As the other respondents have cautioned, best to call DVLA and make sure that you take the name of the person who gives you an answer, and date and time of your call.
It sounds as though you may be ok to drive under section 88. But as already mentioned, it would be best to check with the DVLA.
