Presiflo Shunt Op has anyone had this op ? I have been advised I need it in both eyes. Would be grateful for feedback .

Hi Olivertwist, I had a PreserFlo about 4 years ago. It didn't work for me at first, the tube blocked up and had to go back on drops to lower pressure. I had two remedial procedures a few weeks apart to unblock the tube and eventually it worked in lowering the pressure. I think I was unfortunate in that it works straight away for some people.I subsequently had a trab in my other eye with far less complications .

Anyway they will operate on one eye at a time so you will know if a preserFlo is going to be suitable for your other eye.

I hope that your operations go well for you.

It is brilliant not having to use eye drops with the side effects after nearly 20 years of using them and my sight and pressures are good at the moment.

Thanks very much for your reply very helpful. I am not sure whether the trab op is the best option in the long run after reading up. Some say they are less complications with preserflo than the trab? I am in my early 70’s would prefer just to go the best option first time ! My pressures are remaining high I have the added complication of being on steriod inhaler and the beta blocker eye drops which aren’t compatible with each other for treatment . I am glad you got it sorted in the end was the trab better for you on the whole ?

I had this surgery in my left eye in April. It brought my pressure right down - too far actually, so I had a stent (piece of mesh) added to slow the drainage. I had my right eye done two weeks ago, with a stent. My eye is tired and sore - all part of the healing process. I’d be happy to share my experience further if you’d like.

Hi, I had a Preserflo op on my right eye last November, I also have closed angle glaucoma but only in one eye. I had become allergic to all eye drops and my pressure had gone up to 40 so it was arranged quite quickly. The operation went really well, and I had it under a local anaesthetic and the following day my pressure was down to 6 and has now stabilised at 10. My surgeon is very pleased with the outcome. I had no post surgery issues at all. I was very careful regarding no bending or lifting etc to start with and made sure I didn’t miss any of the post surgery eye drops, which is most important. Apparently for me a Trab wouldn’t have been the best option so I am very happy with how it all went.

I too am in my seventies. I have open angle glaucoma. I had a Preserflo in my right eye in Feb 2023. Done under local anaesthetic and brought the presure down to 10 where it has remained. (Have a check in a couple of weeks time so fingers crossed as I type!) You have to be careful after the op to follow all the instructions but I did not encounter any problems. I had both my eyes done last year at both my pressures were at 46.

I had one eye done and the other 4 weeks later.

My recovery time was so much longer than the information I read about.

I won’t lie, for me it was a horrendous experience but short lived. I couldn’t open my eye for 4 weeks and needed to wait longer for the other eye but would risk loosing sight so I couldn’t.

Many people had it and was not a bad experience and was back up and running within a couple of weeks.

I am now over a year on, my eyes get quite sore/tired. I can feel a pull in the eye when I I stretch them to look to the back of the car for instance. I can’t rub them but it is much better than the alternative.

My eyes are quite closed now since surgery whereas before I had quite large eyes.

I don’t write this to put you off or worry you, just trying to be honest as I had very little information before mine.

Day to day now is absolutely fine. It has caused very very dry eyes. Xx

Hi Bec8891 thanks for your honest opinion and sorry it was not a better experience for you sounds like your on the road to recovery now . I am not looking forward to it but want to still have my independence & still drive so need to have the op. Not sure how long the shunt works for in years . I am glad to get all views.

I had a Preserflo shunt in my right eye in 2020. Unfortunately it did not work for me as the bleb never fully healed and my pressure remained too low for several months. In the end it had to be removed. I think you can tell, by reading the comments others have left, that everyone's experience is different! In the end I think we have to trust our consultants to choose the right procedures for us and then hope for the best. One thing I have learnt over the past 5 years is that if a procedure does not work, there is always something else to try. My pressures are now stable, and although I have lost some vision, I am now hopeful that I will retain my sight in the future.

Hi thanks for your comments and sorry it did not work for you. I am not sure yet if I will be offered trabeculectomy or the Preserflo . What else were you offered when it did not work ? Appreciate your philosophy re comments & hopefully consultants choosing the right op. Glad your pressures are ok now .

I understand from all the consultants I have been under that my eyes are very difficult to work with. I have deep set eyes, a high degree of myopia and many years of glaucoma drop use has left the front surface of my eye very thin and difficult to work with. For these reasons trabeculectomy and preserflo did not work for me but I expect that your situation is very different. I have had baerveldt tubes in both eyes and I have also had cyclodiode laser treatment and canaloplasty in both eyes which has worked well for me. I wish you every success with what ever treatment you decide to have.
