Research in mice to restore damaged optic nerves.

The vision of mice with damaged optic nerves has been partly restored by generating new nerve cells in the eye to replace ones that died.

This article is in the 24 th February edition of New Scientist... which I have only just read !

It can be partly found on line.... research by Biraj Mahato at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.

Prof Ted Garway -Heath at UCL in U.K says it is an approach worth pursuing but there is much to be done before human trials and it is not guaranteed to work in people.

These reports always give me hope.

Unfortunately I used to be swayed also, by these 'false hopes' ( "cancer cured in rodents" ) that the research charities put out from time to time (usually when their funds are getting low, I guess). Sorry to say, nothing has come through in my case, except the old 'mice are not furry people' response, when you ask what happened with so-and-so "cure" you referred to years ago......?

Yes, sadly a lot of research will not be successful but some will be otherwise we would still be in the stone ages. Both my Mum and myself have benefited from glaucoma surgery, and many new glaucoma eye drops are evolving , often now preservative free so far less damaging to the cornea.

Thank goodness for all the background research before Covid arrived , otherwise the vaccines would have taken years to get into production, ditto all the antibiotics ,childhood vaccines, immunoglobulins for cancer etc etc etc.
