Rainbows in the morning

Hello all,

I have my next appointment with the consultant at the hospital on the 28th November.

I have been on various eye drops, tablets since my iridotomy… 1st one in November 2022 and then an enlargement in March due the original holes sealing over. Since then my pressure has been on the high side.

For the last 4 months I have been taking Cosopt twice a day in each eye, I have been monitoring the eye pressure at my local opticians during this time and it has been taken at 12pm and is always around 15.

The consultant has requested I come off of the eye drops for 3 to 4 weeks before my next appointment (I’ve opted for 3 weeks). I have now been off the drops since Tuesday 7th, for the last couple of days in the morning I am seeing the dreaded rainbows halos around the down lights again, I have no eye pain, headaches or blurry vision, the rainbows seem to disappear between 15 mins to and hour afterwards and I don’t see them again all day.

I understand our eye pressures are higher in the morning, I am also sitting up in bed before I get up.

Could this just be slightly higher pressure in the morning?

Could this be because I am no longer on the eye drops and my eyes are adjusting?

I’m trying not to panic as I have in the past during this process, but any feedback would be gratefully received.

thank you

Katy

Hello, IOP is higher in the early morning for everyone. But I understand your concern as you have been asked by your eye specialist to stop the drops so that, at your next appointment it will show a true reading.

As you mention that you are beginning to experience halos, I would recommend that you speak to the eye secretary just to make your eye specialist aware of what it happening as they would want to be kept up to date.

From my own previous experiences, eye pressures have to be up into the 30s before pressure related halos appear. However there are other reasons to see halos.

I sometimes get them in one eye early in the morning and it is down to dry eye and the lack of lubrication through the night. For me they appear slightly different to the pressure halos, sometimes even appearing as a double halo. About 15 minutes or so can be the time for it to resolve.

Best get checked out, but it's not necessarily as bad as it seems. I know how you feel though - for a long time halos would put me in a panic.

Hello,

I went to my local opticians and had my eye pressures checked at midday, one eye was 21 and the other was 20.

I contacted the hospital and the secretary contacted the consultant and expressed my concern re the rainbows in the morning and they said it was nothing to worry about and to just wait until my next appointment on the 28th November.

I am having my pressures checked again on Tuesday at the opticians at 9.30am, just to see how they are a bit earlier in the day.

Thank you again,

Katy
