"Everything you ever wanted to know about Glaucoma" today. Such a good speaker who covered so many aspects of the disease.

Also he asked for volunteers with research,( no need to be a Moorfield patient)

Easy to register , it was on the Glaucoma UK website.

Hi! Oh missed it! Can we watch the talk anywhere? Was it recorded? Glaucoma Uk talks usually remind on their Facebook page and I think I’ve watched a talk on there too but I didn’t see anything on there this time. Also I can never find any research when I click the links.☹️ And Moorfields seem to want you to be referred by your doctor to partake in research. 🤔

Hopefully someone from Glaucoma Uk will see this and advise.

Sorry, I did not make it clear about access to the Moorfields Research link.

This morning I googled 'Take part in Research Glaucoma UK' and then 'click here' which leads onto a form to complete. Moorfields ask potential volunteers to send a copy of their G.P medical records and a referral to Moorfields so they can participate.

Yes, I also nearly missed the webinar , with no reminder by e mail. When I realised this about 2 hours before the talk I registered again and received the usual e mail invitation.

I think it takes a few weeks for the webinars to arrive on the Glaucoma UK website.

The next webinar is on 7 th March at 7-8pm about surgery.

The consultant Dr Hari Jayaram mentioned Vitamin B3 and it seems that Moorfields will be researching the effect it may have with glaucoma.

His description of "cupping" was very good.....imagine a doughnut , the optic nerve is in the hole in the middle and this hole enlarges because of loss of the nerve tissue.

I do not know about access on Facebook but hope you do enjoy the talk eventually. It always gives me hope when I realise there are these excellent medics about.

Best wishes

Hello. All of our DGSG's are also available on our YouTube channel. The one from last night may not be on there yet, but should be in the next week or so.

Am gutted I missed it too so will look forward to catching up on YouTube in due course. I also checked on the Moorfields’ research but, as you say, they need your GP to send your medical records and a referral letter. To be honest I think that’s a big ask as my surgery doesn’t even want to see patients let alone do anything other than dispense medications ☺️

Yes, I agree it does seem a big ask of the very busy GP surgeries.

I am going to give the surgery a letter asking if, at their convenience, they could help glaucoma research by sending a summary of my health records.

In our notes there should be a summary that is fairly easy to access from the computer. The office staff would most likely do this and the G.P then check and sign it.

We have access here to our medical history from the surgery notes which we can display at home.

Moorfields obviously needs to know about other conditions or medications we may have that may interfere with their research. I suppose this is the only way that research can be done...otherwise nothing will advance.

When I go to the surgery I will ask the reception staff how difficult it would be and post the reply .....hopefully positive !

Ooh - look forward to seeing the response! I used to work at a GP surgery and I can vouch for the reams of paper our medical records need. I guess it depends how much detail Moorfields ask for.

I finally watched the talk last night. Yes, it was excellent! Dr Hari (surname forgotten sorry) from Moorfields explained the topics so well! It’s great to have such respected consultants taking time to explain aspects of glaucoma and acknowledging that it is a very complex disease for patients to get their heads around! As a consequence we will all be much better informed patients thanks to Glaucoma Uk. 🙂

However, I wonder at the moment are our NHS Glaucoma consultants ready, or even have time, for this level of extra questions and scrutiny from patients at our eye checks? I hope so, but fear the answer may actually be no. 🤔
