This question would need to be directed to a Dr. If an anti depressant is needed then medical history can be taken into account together with potential unwanted effects. All medicines are not suitable for all people whatever the problem - we are all very individual. Suggest speaking with a medical professional and consider asking about talking therapies or CBT too so that root causes can be addressed. There is no shame in asking for help. It actually shows strength in my opinion and we are all stronger than we give ourselves credit for! Take care

Hi Julie. I took anti depressants for a long time. I spoke to someone at eye clinic and also phoned Glaucoma UK about it. They said it’s ok with open angle glaucoma which is what I have. I’ve stopped taking them now. They didn’t help me and a side effect is worsening of dry eye condition which I have. I’m still pretty depressed if I’m honest but just try to take one day at a time. Hope you can get some answers and try talking therapy maybe xx

Thankyou so much. Best Wishes to you. Definitely take one day at a time. Xx

👍🏻 The advice of a professional on this is wise. Can also recommend long walks… preferably with a dog (borrow one if you haven’t got one😂). I also found knitting hugely helpful. Dr Google 😉 has lots of info on why both are so good for improved mental health.

Hi JulieI also have anxiety and depression and have tried CBT but it wasn't for me. Im reluctant to try anti depressants and like Charliecat try to live each day as it comes which is very hard to do.

Some days I'm ok then the next day I'm desperate.

Please let us know how you get on. You are not alone xx

Hi JulieBookworm1968,

There have been no proven studies which show a correlation between anti-depressants and glaucoma. I have provided you with a link below of a review and meta-analysis which discusses this further.

As Crafted mentioned, before anti-depressants are taken your full medical history is reviewed (including a glaucoma diagnosis) to avoid unwanted side effects. You mentioned below that you have spoken to a professional the other day, which is so important and I am glad you could reach out to someone and talk about how you are feeling. Please reach out if you have any other questions, hope this helps!

I was on sertraline and the information leaflet with it mentioned glaucoma as a possible side effect so I have stopped taking it. My pressure in my left eye was frighteningly high at my last eye test almost 12 months ago and I am hoping that it will be lower this time.
