Tooth/Jaw Pain, any advice?

I am suffering from this pain for about 3 and a half years now. It is in my lower teeth/gum, slightly to the right of center. When I wake up it is hardly there, but by the evening it can get indescribably bad. When it is bad it radiates out to my face and jaw a bit.

I was waiting to speak to the neurologist about it but she has told me now that she doesn't think it is Trigeminal Neuralgia. It took 10 months after the MRI scan for them to tell me this, I am feeling very disheartened. I do have a blood vessel pressing on the nerve, but it is on a different side to my pain.

She said it could be Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, but my dentist doesn't think that is it either. I'm at a bit of a loss.

Does anybody have any advice on dealing with/distracting from facial pain?

I had similar for years. I repeatedly went to the dentist, had multiple x-rays always to be told there was no issue. Finally after about 4 years I had a really bad pain all over the side of my face, round my eye socket, round the back of my neck etc. I went to the GP and said there is no problem with my teeth according to my dentist and she said it was classic TGN I was describing. 2 days later I woke up with a massive swelling on my jaw so went to the dentist again as it looked like an infection to me. Upshot was, 2 lots of antibiotics, multiple injections of corsodyl around the tooth (by both myself 4 times a day and twice by the dentist), the infection would not go so I told them to take my tooth out. I'd cracked it in half from root to tip, the filling was all that was holding it together pretty much. The x-ray didn't pick it up as the cracks were at the back and the front of the tooth (i.e. facing the back and front of my head) and the x-rays were only able to show the side views. I am a night time clencher apparently so that must be how I did it. I now have a very expensive mouth guard I wear at night. Multiple dentists at my surgery insisted my teeth were fine, but they were wrong! Might be worth seeing if they can investigate further. I thought the troublesome tooth was my first or second molar when the pain first started, but it was actually the back one, so the pain can present in a different place. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing! My dentist is still closed for face to face appointments due to covid at the moment, but I will ask for an appointment as soon as they start doing them. It has been at least a year since they last examined my teeth, so maybe something will show up differently now. Worth a go :)

It could be TMJ! I'm currently fighting this damn issue. My problem is bruxism and that cause a lot of inflammation and pain in various places of the head.

Have a look here to see how far TMJ could manifest itself: triggerpoints.net/head-and-...

Thanks that link is really interesting! I can see a trigger point that is exactly where my tooth pain is.

I will look further into this. I hope you are finding some relief with your pain.
