Hi. Several things...if you are likely to lose unconsciousness while in the bath, DON'T have a bath! One of our Facebook families lost their adult daughter after she had a seizure in the bath and they didn't check on her for 15 minutes...just a bit too late. So sad.

There might be several things triggering the spasms in the bath. Firstly, being deficient of magnesium or not having enough in your system. This is a MAJOR cause of spasms and cramps. Fixing it is simple, according to my doctor, keep increasing the dose until you have diarrhoea, then back off a little bit on the dose, as your body expels what it doesn't need.

I take between 3 and 8 magnesium tablets or equivalents a day, more on days that I have spasms or seizures. Epson Salts in the bath is the equivalent of taking several Mg tablets, is very relaxing, and also helps darken your hair so there's less grey showing (well, that's what happens to me whenever I have epson salts baths - lasts a couple of weeks too - nice side effect!)

You might also be having a structural issue with your spine not liking being in the position/shape required for reclining in a bath. If your back muscles are not being used as often as they used to be, this can be a common problem when changing position.

For me, the spasms and seizures can occur after standing up, sitting down or lying down, (from either my office chair or lounge recliner chair) due to this problem...along with a heap of other triggers, both physical and psychological.

I would definitely follow VivienneWaterworth's advice and use Epsom Salts. I also have spasms if I enter a hot tub. To avoid this, I put about 6" of water in the tub which is about room temperature, then I gradually get in. Once my body has acclimatized to this temperature, I gradually add more hot water to bring it up to a temperature I like, which relaxes me. I hope this suggestion helps!
