This post actually has two parts. This first part is the MedPage Today article referenced in the title. A second post to follow is from a source mentioned in the article.

There has been much discussion lately about the use of natural substances and supplements in preventing reducing the effects of COVID-19. The following MedPage Today article, while focusing primarily on the plant flavonoid, quercetin, brings to the forefront the issue of the use of pant derived substances in the form of supplements, plant powders, and even diets as a treatment avenue worthy of discussion (and maybe, therefore, consideration) by the mainstream medical community. That this piece was even published by MedPage Today is a major step in that direction.

The comments (40 at time of posting) are especially insightful and essential reading, as they seem to reflect a growing body of support in the medical community for the informed use of agents derived from nature rather than, or in addition to, those created in the profit-seeking labs of Big Pharma. Commentor Dr. David Moskowitz provides a published case report (n=1) of the successful use of quercetin in treating an asthmatic COVID-19 patient. (scivisionpub.com/pdfs/querc... Maybe COVID will finally reveal that nutraceuticals have a place in Western medicine after all. This comment by Doug Kaufmann seems to hit the mark in that regard:

I'm actually proud of MedPage Today and the medical community for posting this article and these comments; imagine a decade ago referring to therapeutic benefits (or not) from a $20 supplement in any medical forum! Decades ago, I was asked to assist a large TX medical practice in figuring out why so many patients left their practice so quickly. I taught nutritional supplementation and reduced carb eating and requested that this group, who were considered " traditional therapy failures" return to visit the doctors after following the regimen for 14 days. The patients were thrilled for two reasons; the majority finally felt better and they had finally found a group of doctors that offered an approach they had long sought. Most importantly, the doctors didn't lose these patients and many referred their friends to this group-they flourished. I truly believe we are seeing a resurgence of patients looking for safe and effective (type "quercetin" into pubmed.gov) therapies rather than going home and googling the ADE's associated with the prescriptions they were just handed. well done!
