constipation with methotrexate

new to RA on methotrexate 6mg weekly about to start injections instead. Recent fecal impaction. Never ever had that problem before. Wondering if anyone else has had any gut motility issues or impactions or any bowel issues after starting methotrexate. Also take zofran to combat nausea. Don’t know if zofran was contributing factor to bowel issue or not. Doctor says methotrexate does not cause it.

I’ve been on MTX for well over 20 years may 30. My original dose was 22.5 mg but it has now dropped to to 20 mg.

I never experienced constipation from this but some pain killers can cause it.

I found that MTX, even though part of a cocktail of drugs that I take, really made a difference

Thanks for your reply. I’m hoping that it’s not the case. Methotrexate does seem to help me. The only other meds I take with it is folic acid, bp meds, and prednisone.

folic acid counteracts the MTX. Pred also helps. I’ve been on that for over 40 years, initially quite a high dose but now 5mg I can’t seem to get below that. If I get a sudden flare up it’s agreed that I can take a booster dose. Pred can cause cataracts so it’s important to have regular eye tests.MTX may cause breathing issues so lungs should be checked. It’s a balance of benefits against risks. I wouldn’t be without my drugs
