Weak cervix

Hi, I had a preterm premature rupture of the membrane (PPROM) at 16 weeks. No pain, no blood, no labour, so had an induction. All tests were done on baby and me and no cause was found. I’ve read a weak cervix is one possibility, and something that is not routinely checked and is difficult to diagnose after PPROM. A couple of weeks prior my belly felt heavy which I thought was odd so early and with only a small belly, and this sensation felt especially noticeable upon sitting down, almost a pressure type of feeling, and then it would ease a bit as I relaxed into the seat. This was my first pregnancy so I am unsure if this feeling was normal or a sign of a weak cervix. I would be interested to know if others have experienced this sensation?

Hi On_a_mission ,I have gone through that. It was 16 weeks and spontaneous. Doctor said it could be IC or infection or just one of a incedent . Next pregnancy I have to be monitored closely and probably need to get a cerclage. Also consult with a mfm before moving forward

Hey, I’m so sorry that you had to go through this and for your loss.

The same thing happened to me, I lost my son at 16+3 after spontaneous labour. I did have a few warning signs in advance, I was having bleeding every couple of weeks, lost a gush of fluid and then the morning it happened I had a very heavy feeling below. The problems started after reducing progesterone.

I think it can be a range of reasons why it happens. One is definitely a weak cervix.

I’m pregnant again now and I was under the care of the pre term labour clinic from 13 weeks onwards. They would check the length of my cervix every 2 weeks. I was discharged from there at 24 weeks and my cervix was never really very short - which suggests perhaps last time wasn’t a cervix issue (I guess we will never know).

I will also be on progesterone all the way through to the end this time.

I can promise you that next time your care will be different and you will be closely monitored. It’s just annoying that we have to go through such heartache to get that extra care. Xxx

I had vaginal + injections up to about 20 weeks, then just vaginal (400mg) up to about 26 weeks and now I’m on vaginal (200mg) but It’s an ivf pregnancy so that impacts too

Got it, I am going through ivf as well. For the preterm my doctor said the shot won’t be applied as it was before 20 weeks.

To be fair, the pre term clinic told me that the pessaries were enough and they don’t prescribe injections as standard. But I had been on them from the off with my ivf so I stuck on them a bit longer. Hope all goes well xxx
