coffee conflict

My daughter has tonic clonic seizures which is well covered with medication, she loves coffee but was advised after her seizures not to drink coffee but she really misses it. Does anyone have any advice on this issue or drinks coffee who has tonic clonic seizures.

Hi, not being an expert it could acting as a stimulant from the caffeine or depending on her medication some drugs are dehydrating & drinking coffee / alcohol also does that whilst reacting! I know with my drugs I am always thirsty & when having a coffee or wine always a glass of water.

What about drinking normal Tea ? As I drink 3-4 cups of tea a day & lots of water. X SJ

Is the caffeine that the Doctor is referring to or coffee in general? I only have drinks with no caffeine in, easy to buy and most places have both decaf coffee and tea

Agree with the decaff idea, I’m a coffee lover and sometimes have to back off as it effects my head but I was pleasantly surprised on occasion to find some decaffs were good! Trial and error I guess.

hi! i’m no expert & i am very new to this all as i only had my first seizure in December and epilepsy was only just officially diagnosed this month.. i have tonic clonic seizures, my doctor never mentioned caffeine (which i’m now a little concerned about...) but i’ve still been drinking one cup a day usually about an hour after morning meds and I have not had noticed any patterns of caffeine causing issues at all, and i drink tea throughout the day too

I'm also a coffee lover but limit myself to not more than 3 cups a day. I drink herbal/decaffeinated tea (black) which I find helps a lot regarding the caffeine intake. I've had epilepsy for 45 years and have tonic clonic/absence seizures but will not give up my coffee!

Coffee! An addiction for me. Usually drink Espresso. It may depend on your type of Epilepsy. Though I do drink plenty water during the day. It always a mix of things that cause seizures for me. Dehydration, alcohol, lack of sleep and food. Then wake up in hospital. Riding racehorses I watch my weight and never eat properly.

Ummm, I love a cup of of fresh coffee, although I just have one in my 40s. I've even heard that it is good for the brain. Unless, there is a clear link between seizures and the coffee that your daughter drinks, there is no reason to stop it. I have also suffered from tonic clonic seizures from the age of around 11. I found there to be more of a link between hormones (stress and progesterone) than anything else. Also too much alcohol, wheat bread have also been problematic.

Oh. And pasta also proved a problem in my late 30s so I tend to eat 'free from' and rye bread sour dough now.
