Hi I have been diagnosed with CKD level 3 ( I had a kidney removed in Jan 2012 due to a cancerous tumour). The question I would like to ask is - Does anyone know the recommended daily allowance of potassium and phosphate for an adult female.
Thanks

There is no golden rule as each persons system copes differently , In general be sensible and just reduce what you would normally have eaten of the foods cotaining them . The fact that different foods contain different amounts also makes it hard . Keep up todate with your renal dietician who will monitor your blood counts and they will be your best advisor , due to the fact they will have more accurate counts of how your system is coping
Not sure on amount but I'm sure any renal dietician can tell you. Having been on dialysis for the best part of 40 years, what I did was stop eating cheese and milk, in fact I stopped eating all dairy products completely. I quickly got used to it and nothing tastesbetter than a cup a black or green tea.
Dairy products caused my phosphate levels to shoot up and made me itch all over especially my back. It was a great relief and has certainly kept my phosphate levels down.
Sorry, left out the potassium issue. Basically the same as my above message, only this time I stopped eating chocolate, peanuts and other foods that are high in potassium. Although I'll have the occasional sliced tomatoes (another that's high in Potassium) it is so much easier (for me anyway) just to give up those foods entirely as opposed to playing around with weighing, measuring and calculating portions. Best of luck.
Hi Laura,
The Helpline have a useful information leaflet all about phosphate. Give us a call on 0845 601 02 09 and I can send you a copy.
i would like to give a warning about potassium levels. everyone keeps banging on about not letting the level get too high but no one mentioned to me that mine was too LOW. it was left to me examine my blood results on Renal Patient View only to discover it was too low and was the cause of the heart fluttering/jumping i have been expeiencing for about 6 months. a banana a day and it has now stopped. i will be interested to ask when i next go to the clinic why this was not flagged up to me
ah Poppydolly thank you for that bit of info. My heart does this occasionally, changed my thyroxine intake and it stopped, but lately has done it a few times. I do normally have a banana a day, so will be interesting to see if it happens on the odd occasion that I don't eat one x
p.s. this is Googie, but I forgot my password and for some reason, when i asked for it to be reset, I don't appear to be getting any emails
