What is good tasting, non-sodium, table salt (sodium chloride) substitute?
Hi,All of the salt substitutes all contain potassium, which isn’t a good idea to use if you have kidney disease. I gradually decreased my salt intake using herbs and lemon juice and black pepper and spices instead as seasoning, the only thing I use salt in is homemade bread.
There isn't any.
Remember you don't really have to totally eliminate salt. (Unless your doctor has given you that directive). You just have to use it sensibly. Salt is bad for CKD because it increases Blood Pressure. But if you have your BP under control, you are likely still allowed up to 2000mg of salt daily. I NEVER touch table salt, nor add it to dishes I cook. But most foods come with a "built in" sodium content which just needs to be monitored. So what about flavor? Instead of salt I use Ground Garlic (not powder). McCormick makes a nice brand. It spices up your food and does not have a harsh garlic taste.
