Hello!
My name’s Sophie and I’ve been working for Dyslexia Action since January 2010. I was drawn to Dyslexia Action because I, and many of my friends, have dyslexia so I know first-hand what a genuine struggle it can cause.
My dyslexia was picked up when I was twelve by my German teacher. I dreaded reading aloud in class because it seemed like I was the only one who was faltering on every word, and trying to stay on top of my timetable was a nightmare. I was taken to the Dyslexia Institute (which is what Dyslexia Action used to be called) to be assessed and the results came back that I have dyslexia. Like so many dyslexic people who I have spoken to since, the diagnosis helped me to understand why I learn differently than many of my classmates.
I was lucky that my teacher had enough experience to pick up on my dyslexia as I have since learned that teachers don’t actually have to have any training in understanding or spotting signs of dyslexia and other learning difficulties. That’s why I’m so pleased to be working for Dyslexia Action who are involved in changing that by backing this online petition, epetitions.direct.gov.uk/pe... Please sign it and help to ensure that teachers get the knowledge of dyslexia they need during initial teacher training.
