At what age were you diagnosed with D... - Diabetes Research...
At what age were you diagnosed with Diabetes?
I was 20 classed as juvenile onset which is what type 1was called
was diagnosed as Type 2 in 2001 in Canada
managed on diet for 5 years, then Metformin.. Came back to UK in 2008,needed long term insulin.
moved from north to south 2009 then needed fast acting and long term insulin
2013 diagnosed as LADA
2015 as Type1
Never was diabetic until I had seizures. Then two years later Type 1 in my 40's.
I was diagnosed Type 2 8 years ago aged 45 but I'm probably Type 1 because I actually had thyroid cancer that went undetected until 2013. Metformin isn't working but I cannot have other meds because they interfere with the thyroid meds I need to stop the cancer growing back.
Did your Endocrinologist put you on insulin ThyroidThora ?
No, he doesn't specialise in diabetes and is more concerned with getting the right meds for my thyroid to stop me being underactive (hypothyroid) and prevent the cancer returning. I think I should be on insulin because T1 and thyroid problems run in my family. Plus, I read somewhere that when diabetes and thyroid problems are diagnosed together insulin therapy is the best course of action because Metformin and other tablets don't work in the long term. I had the article stored on my laptop but it crashed earlier this year and I cannot find document in the file where it should be.
Do you want to get a second opinion from another doctor?
I probably should but I don't know where to start. My GP seems to leave it up to my endocrinologt and he's leaving my surgery at the end of this month. The GP that is left is the one that didn't diagnose me properly and only did diabetes blood tests in 2008, she didn't do the full blood profile that would have found a problem with my thyroid and the cancer, hence me not being diagnosed until 2013. I don't trust her and will never see again!
If it was me, I would get another doctor ASAP. It's your decision.
I probably will as the GP I do see is leaving my practice and I cannot stand the GP's that are left behind.
When is your next scheduled appointment?
Hi,
I'm seeing my GP next week for my diabetes review but I saw him today on a different matter and discussed it briefly with him.
I explained that I'm getting my blood sugars down and am considering insulin as per an article I'd read. I explained that the GP that diagnosed my diabetes never did the full blood profile and that my surgeon confirmed I had thyroid cancer for at least 4 years and probably longer and that it all coincided with my diabetes diagnosis. He agreed with me but gave me the name of 2 diabetes tablets I might want to consider first before I see him next week. He did not want to increase my Metformin to 2000mcg (I'm on 1500mcg) as he feels the side effects out weight the benefits. I haven't time to check the tablets he's recommended because I'm looking after my grandson but, I'll have a look before I see him for sure.
What are your thoughts?
