I am having my PD catheter inserted on Friday. I'm a little nervous...and pretty squeamish! Dopes anyone have any tips on how to deal with this? Was anyone in a lot of pain after? If so, how long did it last? Did anyone struggle to eat, sleep or shower?! Any advise or tips would be greatly appreciated!
Hello. I totally understand how you must be feeling. I had mine inserted in June this year. I had mine done under local aesthetic so I was very aware of what they were doing. Sometimes I would feel a little scratch and if so they would give some.more aesthetic all I could really feel was w bit of pulling here and there. I had a little discomfort afterwards but no pain ... didn't feel nauseous either. The other thing was it took my.body a while to get used to the dialysis but it has now and it was the best decision I could have made. You will be absolutely fine. Wishing you all the best on your journey.
Had mine done in Spain 3 years ago and it's still going strong. It was done under local but I never felt anything and you can't see what they are doing. I chatted to the Doctor and Nurse while they were doing it. Afterwards I took a pain killer for 2 days and then stopped because there was so little pain. I didn't shower until the staples came out, again painless, but I used large baby wipes instead.
Hope that helps. Best of luck.
Fred
Thank you for the replies! I have been told I'm having mine done under general, so I guess I won't feel anything while it's happening but I'm very awake I will be waking up in discomfort or pain. I feel better reading this though so thank you. I'm not having the dialysis training for a month afterwards so I'll have that time to get used to it. Have you heard of anyone getting an infection?
I didn't experience any pain so I hope it's the same for you ... it takes a bit of getting used to having it there but it soon becomes a natural part of you ... I have heard of a few people that have had infections one said there was no rhyme or reason why just happened ... May have been changes internally rather than something coming in ... so you can be as clean as you like and still get an infection, crazy! All you can do is do your best and if you notice anything different ring your nurse ... hope all goes well for you tomorrow.
