A recent study was conducted to assess the role of garlic as an anti-hyperglycaemic,lipid lowering, anti inflammatory and improving glycemic control in obese patients with type 2diabetes.It was observed that both metformin alone and metformin with garlic, reduced fasting blood glucose and pp glucose significantly with greater percentage reduction with metformin plus garlic.A fall in total cholesterol, triglyceride,LDL and increase in HDL were more pronounced in patients treated with metformin plus garlic.

It does reduce. I tried a concoction of raw garlic (3 large cloves), ginger (1 inch), lemon juice (1 tblspn) and honey (1 teaspn) for a week on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning. The sugar reading went up by only 3-4 points. It's widely used in ayurveda and naturopathy for lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Side effect? There's some amount of body odour, especially when you shower (the bathroom smells of garlic!).
