Two ways to dodge diabetes

Given the epidemic of diabetes sweeping the United States and many other countries, it can seem as though developing diabetes is inevitable. Not so. A landmark clinical trial called the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) showed that a healthy diet and regular exercise can prevent type 2 diabetes. This three year study found that people who lose 5% to 7% of their weight and exercise about 30 minutes a day can reduce diabetes risk by more than half.

The Look AHEAD study also showed that losing weight and exercising can be a powerful way to fend off diabetes. The trial compared lifestyle changes (portion-controlled diets with prepared meals and moderate-intensity exercise for at least 175 minutes a week) with simple diabetes education. After one year, people in the lifestyle group had lost an average of 8.6% of their body weight, compared with 0.7% in diabetes education group. With the combination of weight loss and exercise came improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure, and HDL (good) cholesterol. Later follow-up showed that these improvements extended over the first four years of the study.

What’s more, the lifestyle changes also improved quality of life, based on questionnaires designed to assess the Look AHEAD participants’ physical and mental health. The greatest gains were physical changes — for example, compared with the control group, people in the lifestyle group were more fit, felt more vital, and had less body pain. They also reported feeling less depressed.

Losing weight and exercising are simple ways to avoid diabetes. But they can be hard to do. If you’re ready to make some changes to avoid the life-long consequences of diabetes, talk with your doctor. Together you can create a manageable plan that increases your chances of success.

Following are some general suggestions based on me experience as a diabetic for about 20 years:

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder which is a result of the pancreatic gland in our body either produces little or no insulin or the body has developed resistance to insulin. In both cases, the body cells do not receive the glucose needed for production of energy because insulin is essential for glucose to enter the cells. This results in the blood sugar levels to increase beyond acceptable levels, though your body cells are starved for glucose. This condition is very bad for our well being and over long term may result in severe complications.

Controlling blood sugar levels is a tough job but it is not impossible if you realize that everything is in your own hands. This is so,because though you may get good advise from doctors and dieticians,it is ultimately Y O U that will have to take all the necessary steps to successfully control diabetes. I am giving certain general suggestions based on my personal experience which you may consider and adopt based on your personal choice.

Diet plays a very important role in managing diabetes. You should reduce intake of foods that are rich in carbohydrates like sweets, rice, wheat, other grains ,potato, beet and other root vegetables rich in starch. You should eat more of vegetables, sprouts, greens and salads that give you lot of fiber, vitamins and minerals. Each meal you take should be smaller but you may have 5 or 6 meals instead 3 meals a day.

Exercise is very important to control diabetes. Daily brisk walking or jogging for at least 40 to 60 minutes is ideal. Such exercise will consume lots of energy and sugar levels come down accordingly.

Mental stress aggravates diabetes. Lead a stress free life by adopting relaxation techniques like music meditation, yoga and breathing exercises.

Consult a diabetologist and get prescribed for medication if necessary and comply with the doctor's advise scrupulously.

Please remember that the most important person in managing your diabetes is Y O U.

Sorry for those in such conditions. Am also suffering from type 2 diabetes, however, daily exercises for at least an hour per day is very vital and necessary for the control of sugar levels. Please try.

Do you take additional medication after the exercise? Because for me i exercise every Saturday but i have to take my medication two tablets twice a day without knowing whether my sugar level is up or not.

I'll go along with all those BUT the underlying thing is a basic healthy balanced diet and exercise. I'm not talking about pumping iron in a gym. It's just about burning off sugar. For your own sake don't overdo it. In the west we take in far too much sugar and that helps trigger the insulin resistance. Don't know WHY but we know the mechanism and HOW it works. Being overweight is another trigger.

I take it you are talking type 2. Type 1 is totally different.

Before you take more exercise, do you already get enough? It's too easy to assume we all have sedentary jobs. For instance if you're a postie you don't need any more long walks :)
