I tried Mirapex for three weeks. After three weeks I woke up with ankles that were the size of balloon tires. But I had no other side effects. But I had to stop it. No hallucinations.

I had this problem plus purple marks that did not go away when I stopped taking it..

mirapex caused my feet, ankles and legs to swell. when I went off (switched to sinemet over a year ago, no problems) I lost 40 lbs. also had sleep problems where I fell asleep spontaneously (ie; happened in midst of staff meeting) throughout day, which stopped when I went off mirapex. Plus developed vericose-type veins which I still have.Halucinations/nightmares were a problem too.

Tried it in 2003 for dystonia... ramped up with good results but couldn't stay awake after 2pm.

Please be VERY careful of compulsive behaviors. I ended up having to file a BK for $50K

because I lived alone and was out of control. I understand from my Neuro. that gambling,

sex, food, etc. can become a compulsion with Mirapex. I was diagnosed in 2007 and for the

last several years Sinemet with other additions has been the best for me. Good Luck.

Mirapex also brought on hallucinations. Really strange stuff. Please be careful. Good Luck.

I had the compulsive behaviors too. It was exhausting. Plus constantly nauseated. I ate crystal ginger all day. My neuro seeing me throw up in his office took me off.

Hi,I have bad effects from Miraplex Er.Compulsive behavior,Just really for the most part Gambling with scatch off's in New jersey,It's like when Im buying them,I don't realize when to stop myself,But after the fact,I feel really bad. Before Miraplex,I was able to just buy$10 worth of tickets now it's like$50 a day.The last few weeks been staying away from them,But have to really try to stay away from them it's ruining my life,It bad even living with Parkinsons and dealing gambling. This is not the first time a agonist thru me into compulsion ,I was Dx 11 years ago and was put Requip and had a shopping problem,I must pruchase 10 sweaters in a khol's store on time and really not a sweater person,I purchased med and large of the same sweater,I had a hard time getting myself out of the store,My wife called me on the cell phone and talked me out of there,Another Time I sat my kids an talk non stop for about two hours,They were looking me like I was crazy,Because I am normally a quiet person,It had to deal with compulsion,When you were never like that.Just try to keep aware of this effect,You can stop the gambling when you notice or someone close to you brings it to your attention,Don't get offended with them,Because you may not notice your doing these compulsions.Takecare

I have taken Mirapex for 6 years and recently switched to the extended release. i makes my days much smoother. I have to make sure I get plenty of sleep. No hallucinations so far.

My husband too on slow release and this has been much better for him. No hallucinations either, he does like the odd game of bingo and has gone off on his own to play which he never did before, but I do too so we limit ourselves to 1 game a month at our local bingo hall.

Started on Mirapex slow release 6 months ago , take it at 6 am. Mornings in work much better than before. I am aware of the compulsive side but so far so good.

The trouble with Parkinson's meds is that they have a different effect on different people. Whenever you ask a question like this you will get a variety of different answers. The only way to find out how it will affect you is to try it.

One piece of advice I would give, is to increase your dose very slowly, a lot more slowly than the neurologists advise. This will help to reduce any unwanted side-effects.

I could not tolerate Mirapexin at all. I tried for six months before having to admit defeat. During the six months. I felt extremely ill , as though I had the flu. I managed to struggle to work and back but had no strength to do anything else with the rest of the day.

Having said that I am one of the few people who cannot tolerate dopamine agonists beyond a certain dose, which unfortunately doesn't manage my symptoms. I am having to try some new drugs to try to manage the stiffness and tremor and pain, fingers crossed. If this doesn't work. I'll have to take levodopa which I'm keen to avoid for as long as possible.

good luck with the mirapexin, I hope it works for you.

Have you been considered for DBS? My husband had it & takes very little Med.

" If this doesn't work. I'll have to take levodopa which I'm keen to avoid for as long as possible."

Would you please tell me why you want to avoid levodopa? That is what I am on since almost the beginning of parkinson's. Thank you. ~~Dennis

Hokuto profile image
Hokuto in reply toDennis

If she's like me, it's because of warnings that while Levadopa is the gold standard for managing symptoms, its good effect lasts only for a certain number of years, after which it begins causing other problems. For that reason, I don't want to start Levadopa until it becomes unavoidable. I'm currently managing ok with Bi-Sifrol (actually, my doctor started me on Mirapex LA (the version of extended release we have in Japan) just today, but I won't take my first dose until tomorrow AM.

Hokuto profile image
Hokuto in reply toHokuto

Well, my first day on Mirapex LA went well; symptoms seemed to be managed more consistently through the day than the up-and-down peak-and-trough action of Bi-Sifrol. It's now evening, tho, and I do have some jittery leg as I sit in front of the computer. It's bearable. Now to see whether continued use has any worse side-effects than the Bi-Sifrol.

I've been taking prolonged release Mirapexin for 7 - 8 years, with no problems. Previously I had been on Ropinerole (Requip) another dopamine agonist, which made me very sleepy Eventually I had to add on Sinemet, which makes a big difference to all my symptoms, but only for a short time till it begins to wear off. It also caused some dyskinesia, which is now counteracted by Amantadine. As Caroline says, everyone reacts differently to medication. It's important to rread the leaflets which come with the tablets, and be aware of possible side effects, but don't expect them. They may not happen, but if you have concerns, tell your doctor.

All the best, I hope Mirapexin works for you

Be very careful with this med. It was great for controlling motor problems but the side effects were disastrous for me. Compulsive hypersexuality, halucinations, forgetfulness, confusion Lost a career in which I had reached some seniority and had a high level of respect within my professional community. The problem is, as you can see from the posts, for many with PD its a good medication.

Please do take care, make someone close to you aware of the potential side effects and get them to watch out for you. Once off Mirapex and onto Madopar, everything became 'normal' again,

Whilst the Pd community understands full well what DAs can do, I'm afraid the rest of the world is not so understanding

Good luck, David

MagicMax profile image
MagicMax in reply tolightning

Is that really spelled Madopar? Can't find anything close?

lightning profile image
lightning in reply toMagicMax

Hi MagicMax

Yes, the spelling is correct. It's levodopa and benserazide. Manufactured by Roche David

The jury is out on this, I changed over to Mirapexen SR in September last year.

Generally I have found it much better and the previous 3-a-day.

However, if I am off balance I have halucinations, really strange dreams and headaches like really bad migraine which have been mistaken? for a stroke/tia's at A&E. But I cant say it is any one particular med. More than likely its a mix

Mirapex helped a lot with the stiffness in my arm and fingers. I started on 1 mg 3x day and adjusted to .75 because of problems sleeping. I also take L-dopa/C-dopa for tremor. the two are working nicely, some days I even forget I have PD. Compulsive behavior is overuse of my computer, can't seem to live wihout it anymoreand extreme nail biting, issues I have had but now magnified. Mild hallucinations like shadowy images out of the corner of my eye of familiar things like pets or family.

Hokuto profile image
Hokuto in reply toPecanPie

I'm glad to hear you mention seeing things out of the corner of your eye! I've been on Bi-Sifrol (a short-acting version of Mirapex) for the past year, and I have frequent incidents of seeing something in the corner of my eye, but I never thought about its being a side effect of the meds. I do have very vivid dreams as well

I tried Mirapex and Requip...neither was good for me. I was in a drug induced stupor most of the time and had blood pressure issues (up and down).

I took Mirapex this past january and i only taken for one day , by the night time i couldn't breath and i blacked out 4 within 20 minutes, was in the hospital and the doctors told me to continue taking along with my carbi dopa, but i wouldn't i was to scared. So goodluck to you, i know when i see my neurologist in october he will insist on me taking it..

maryalice profile image

I've been taking Mirapex {100x mg.x3} for more then 10 years without any problems. I tried the Mirapex ER and it made me too sleepy.

Don't give up too quickly. I have taken Mirapex for 6 years. Last year I switched to the slow release version, which meant only taking one pill in the morning and being even all day. This did not take my left hand tremor away though and I am now taking Levadopa as well.

Seems ok, not perfect, but I get around. My tip for everyone is stop focusing on the PD so much. Go on a coach trip, have a short break, do something nice for someone; distraction can be a good temporary fix.

Be wise. Mirapex can cause any OCD small problem into an explosive disaster. Shopping, sex, gambling, eating, etc. Please be cautious.

Been there done that and not much help. My new cocktail is Carbid 50/200 about 6times a day plus requip 2 mg about 6 times a day and the new one is amantadine 100mg 2 times a day. Hopeing to buy time from DBS

I switched from mirapexin to mirapexin er 18 months ago after changing neurologists.

I now take Mirapexin er

Sinemet

Azilect

Paracetomol

The effect was so good that I also managed to join a gymand loose 1 1/2 stone.

When I saw my consultant last January he said he could not believe I had PD !!!

Do get ob comp behaviour....cleaning

A shame that meds don't work the same for all of us.

I have been taking Mirapex ER 1.5 mg since I was diagnosed with PD. I take it in the AM although i was originally suppose to take it at night. I also take Azilect 1 mg at bedtime. I still have days where I shake quite a bit but it's usually in the evening between meds. The best thing is that all the foggy brain problems along with the feeling that there was a electric storm in my brain has all but subsided! Still have moments but not as bad. I have days where I'm a shuffler and unstable and I this all started less than a year ago.... no real side effects from either med! Yea :)

I go back to my PD doctor Monday, so will see what he says.

I've been on Mirapex ER for 5 years. Recently went up to 3.0 mg. I do have a compulsive behavior...CLEANING! Can't sit still for more than 10 minutes and I'm up and cleaning something! If i do "rest" or try to read, I fall asleep. Maybe that is because I only get between 4-6 hrs of sleep/night. Other then that drug, I'm on 1.0 mg Azilect. Dz 7 yrs and nobody would know I have PD. My gait is slightly compromised so I don't walk for exercise...bought myself a bike and go for a ride every morning for 30-45 minutes. Gotta go, windows need cleaning. lol
