I find creativity is my best medicine. every day, I have to create something new. I may even be OCD at it. But still, it helps. Anyone else feel this way?
See my video, a sketch piece about having Parkinson's. What's so funny? See "That Actor Guy_A Parkinson's Rag":

Just don't stop Gary! Just viewed some of your stuff on YouTube. What a talent, you made me laugh and cry. I loved 'if I were you' and the very poignant 'my father who art.....'. Thank you xx
You would have been very interested in hearing a talk by Dr Kieran Breen, Head of Research Parkinson's UK, last week at the MAC, Birmingham Arts Cente, England. It was "Art and the Brain". Seems that people become more creative...poetry and painting in particular...after diagnosis. (Excellent talk by the way.) Or is it just that they have more time??? Who knows!!
Gary, that was awesome... I'm hooked. Glad creativity is your best medicine, cause it means we're going to get to watch more of your videos!
I consider creativity my best medicine too and as essential to my health as eating. I've got a bit of the OCD part too... spending many hours a day at it. I design and make jewelry. My symptoms are the only thing that stops me from spending more time creating...
Looking forward Gary, to your posting more of your creations.
I like that Gary, and I do agree about Creativity. And OCD! I have so many creative interests, and I flit from one to the other, When I have an idea I just want to keep on till I've achieved what I want - drawing, painting, which includes painting with an iron, Gary, using wax, it's called Encaustic Art, and various other things, even the odd poem. It is therapeutic when things are going well, but can be frustrating when they aren't. But don't let anything beat you!
I'm inspired! I bought water colors and they sit unopened. I started piano lessons , started sounding pretty good, but got a torn rotator cuff. I'll get back to it. I have random thoughts for a pretty raunchy stand up comedy routine. And dancing! I executed a perfect chacha turn last night after Dancing With the Stars. My dance teacher died of sarcoma. He was an angel. Taught me for 15 years even after my PD was quite apparent and I was hobbling around on a cane. Turn on the music and we flew. Given a choice between a new boyfriend and a dance teacher, I'll take the latter, thank you!!!
Parkinson's must trigger creativity. My daughter started crocheting in December ( fast learner) and is already doing projects that experienced crocheter do. It inspired me to pick back up on the craft that my grandmother taught me when I was young (I'm only 47 now.) But I have done more than ever before. I love to crochet beanies. I have made Winnie the Pooh, R2D2, all 4 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a Pokeball, Spongebob Squarepants, and I am now working on Darth Maul from Episode 1: Phantom Menace (Star Wars). It keeps my hands moving and my mind focused. Our creations can be seen on our facebbok page: uniquely different crafts. There is a photo album of the different items and mediums we use to create them. I am looking forward to whatever I can create next. I love it.
Crocheting helps you to focus more on the fine motor skills. I actually helps improve the movement. At least, I think it does. I paint t-shirts and any item I find with a blank surface, a learning to make bent wire art jewelry, make polar fleece scarves with applique images on them to match the beanies I make and I make fascinator hats.
The creativity in me hasn't stopped, infact it is on almost 24/7. I am a well known artist that has been recently diagnosed with Parkinsons. i paint every day to fight back, and also weave and spin. I find the artistic work is a great asset in having to deal with the disease. i am also a mneme (memory) art therapist and have worked with the cognitive impaired, particularily autism and alzheimers so let's throw in Parkinsons too. Painting is a GREAT exercise of the mind to keep it clear, and also keeps the quality of life going and preservation of ones digniity. So keep at it everybody!! I think we aught to gather up people and do an exhibit of our work, those that would like to anyway. Keep on going, and keep strong. <3 <3 <3 ALSO anybody interested in learning about PAINT DANCING take a look at the videos an info on it at Paint Dancing.Com I am the national expansion leader for it... WE can do that and press forward!!
LOLOL Paint Dancing is FUN. And you don't have to know how to do either in order to have fun. Can be used as a fundraiser too. In General, artists, when they are working on a painting, they have music running and they move with the music while painting......so that is PAINT DANCING!! One creates a painting set to music. The music sets the painting and the mood. It is expressive painting, not analytical painting. Any genre of music too. Kids love it too!! So you gather your bestest friends, and family and turn on the CD player to your favorite songs, with some inexpensive art supplies. (kids watercolorsets that are non toxic) and paper and you are ready to PAINT DANCE. We dress down for paint dancing.... old clothes and shoes have to be worn. Empty coffee cans serve for water. Inexpensive paint brushes too. Throw the party and have FUN!! oh and if you wanna make it a fundraiser....charge people!!
My daughter and I are both ordained ministers. We have a youth group that meets every Wednesday evening. I think this could be a great fundraising project. They can paint dance a painting then auction their work to the highest bidder. My husband pastors 2 churches and our youth group meets in a different church in a different town. We have enough contacts to have a great auction. Gotta try this.
I love to knit even though I am much slower and some days cant knit at all.I also like to make my own greetins cards
I started quilting after my medical retirement started. I tried following a pattern in a quilting but couldn't concentrate and it was a pain in the butt to finish. So I decided to create whatever I want to make. May not look as neat and tidy and people don't recognize the pattern, which seems to be important to some other quilters, or my lines may not come together, but I made it with my idea. That's very important to me now and I like doing it my way. I also don't use much new material, just a little for baby quilts. I scour thrift shops, flea markets, and yard sales for recycled material that catches my eye and bring new life to something discarded. Just finished one for a wedding present for my nephew and already churning ideas for the next one. Have a great day!
