This is unfortunate! One of the top Parkinson’s researchers, gone.

Doctor Behind Award-Winning Parkinson’s Research Among Scientists Purged From NIH

"Leading scientists at the National Institutes of Health, the US’s leading medical research agency, were swept up Tuesday in the Trump administration’s latest firing blitz.

"Several top scientists charged with overseeing research into disease prevention and cures at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) were notified that they were subject to a reduction in force on Tuesday as part of a devastating purge of federal employees carried out by US Health and Human Services secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., WIRED has learned.

"Multiple sources at the NIH, granted anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, confirmed Tuesday afternoon that at least 10 principal investigators who were leading and directing medical research at the agency had been fired. Among them is Dr. Richard Youle, a leading researcher in the field of neurodegenerative disorders previously awarded the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences for his groundbreaking research identifying mechanisms behind Parkinson’s disease."

Just bloody terrible.

This is awful. These changes were made too abruptly without a careful assessment of who is doing vital work.

These political decisions affects us wherever we live.

Let's hope these scientists get equivalent jobs in Europe or Canada and can continue their work. My nephew’s wife also is a neurology scientist and they are thinking of moving to Europe with their family but it is a difficult decision.

a lot of these scientists doing duplicate and unfortunately useless research, spending tons of money

Efficiency and being responsible is the key which is not common

I agree 👍🏻

Your comment clearly shows you know very little about how scientific research is conducted. Do you think all scientists operate in a vacuum without knowledge of what others in their field are doing? Have you ever heard of peer review?

Yes sir

I am a physician and been involved in research projects and I know how corrupted the system is

Do not judge before knowing

Thank you

If these cuts were being made after someone actually looked at the details and made appropriate determinations that would be one thing. But that is not what is happening. This just mindless knee-jerk slash and burn.

Agree! and in the end, who knows - look at all of the FALSIFIED research presented on Alzheimer's for years!! If only we knew who was really on our side & not in the pockets of big Pharma & Big Ag. My husbands Neurologist said there is a Pandemic of YOPD- no one knows where is it coming from.... Really, NO one? with all the chemicals sprayed on our food, and food dyes, wreaking havoc & creating chronic inflammation, for the past decades, (allowed by the government).. It's a disgrace -- the good ones will maybe be able to come forward with more research not paid for by big Pharma and help the people that need it.

I agree here too 👍

What do you mean by "falsified?" Do you mean 'wrong' or inconclusive, or incomplete? Your conspiracy theory-filled mind is leaking.

Caa11 profile image
Caa11 in reply toWildsidephotog

I'm sorry you feel that way, but it's no conspiracy theory ~ A fraudulent 2006 paper misled Alzheimer’s research for 16 years. That is probably the reason that 99 % of Alzheimer's meds don't work. Some medications that reduce brain plaques don't necessarily improve cognition, and some may even accelerate brain atrophy. Don't hear much about what works~ ( diet) and ways to take action to prevent / minimize risk.....

So, because scientific fraud has occurred we should drastically slash science funding from the government. To the extent anyone picks up the slack it will be private interests with a profit motive. Yes, I'm sure that will solve the problem.

Caa11 profile image
Caa11 in reply topark_bear

No, unfortunately - as you are aware, that won't solve the problem- I am not really sure what will. Just trying to look through a different lens is all. Right now, it's just Big Pharma with Big Pharma interest $$$ -- which is better? /worse? Who knows? Billions in profits & more $ in research - You'd think we would be further along by now, no? Why not approach with an open mind & a questioning attitude? Even if it goes against the norm? We have a sick care system here in America, not a healthcare system. Those who question are called crazy & evil..... but the government keeping people obese, fed crappy food and wrought with physical & mental illness - that's not crazy ? 🫣. Not here to argue - It's ok to question things

The solution to finding effective/modifying treatments for this and every other condition is and has always been to have as many skilled researchers as possible going where their (and others) research leads them without fear of being punished for failure to achieve a scientific or commercial outcome. Incremental progress. Which, if you are wiling to actually read about it, has been working. That there isn't a 'cure' yet doesn't mean we aren't closer to one than we were 25 years ago because we undeniably are. Will it help the current gen of PWPs? Very likely not, but if you care about your kids or their kids then it still should be important to you.

The only entities that can afford that are government entities (i.e the people as a collective) because they don't need to present quarterly financial results and early-mid stage research simply isn't proifitable. The moves being undertaken in the United States right now will absolutely set PD research back. By how long is unclear.

References to big pharma on this topic are baffling as they have literally nothing to do with early stage PD research. Presumably this is just people regurgitating nonsense they have ingested in lieu of reading and thinking.
