B6 vitamin

I would like your help! I haven't taken any supplements for almost 2 months, so I had my B vitamin levels checked. I had the test, all B levels are normal, except for B6, which is 150% of normal. I have never taken a B6 supplement! Who understands this?

"A person could have high B6 levels even without taking a supplement due to a diet excessively rich in foods high in vitamin B6, a genetic predisposition causing abnormal B6 metabolism, a recent post-bariatric surgery where dietary absorption might be altered, or potentially consuming fortified foods with high B6 content without realizing it; however, most cases of high B6 levels are caused by taking too much B6 through supplements.

Key points to consider:

Diet:

Eating a large amount of foods like bananas, potatoes, chicken, fish, and fortified cereals can contribute to high B6 levels even without supplementation.

Genetic factors:

Certain genetic disorders, like hypophosphatasia, can lead to elevated B6 levels due to impaired metabolism of the vitamin.

Post-bariatric surgery:

Individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery may experience altered nutrient absorption, leading to higher B6 levels even with a normal diet.

Unidentified supplement intake:

Sometimes people might be consuming B6 in other supplements like energy drinks or multivitamins without realizing it.

Important note: While high B6 levels from diet alone are possible, it's generally rare and most cases of vitamin B6 toxicity stem from excessive supplementation. "

Some doctors think any high B6 is a problem because of the potential for B6 toxicity, but they are mistaken. B6 toxicity is caused by an excess of pyridoxine, the inactive form of B6. See here for detail: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

The commercially available lab tests for vitamin B6 check on the active form of B6, referred to as PLP or P5P. They do not measure the level of pyridoxine, so the test result has no bearing on the danger of B6 toxicity. For further detail on this see here: healthunlocked.com/cure-par...

Vitamin B2, riboflavin, is needed by the body in order to recycle pyridoxine back to PLP. Vitamin B2 deficiency is common, and can cause B6 toxicity due to excess of pyridoxine. Detail here: healthunlocked.com/cure-par....

I’m curious how you have your levels checked. What sort of testing confirms B levels?

How were your B2 levels?. B2 or riboflavin is a necessary co-factor for metabolizing B6. Do you have any symptoms od B2 deficiency?

I had a blood test and B2 was fine, as were all B's.

It is not clear which supplements you have taken previously, but as noted here, B6 is added not only in B complex and multivitamins but also in magnesium, zinc, and many food products.

Due to its half-life of about a month, B6 can still be present in abundance after supplementation, even after 2 months.
