- A huge topic I have tried to tackle - to be open with the diagnosis and communicate it with people and if so, when. I haven't seen much on it and think it is one of the key early decisions. Lots of very differing opinions I am sure but something to discuss/share thoughts on fightingparkinsonss.com/202...
SHOULD I BE OPEN AND TELL PEOPLE - Cure Parkinson's
SHOULD I BE OPEN AND TELL PEOPLE
I told my immediate family immediately and friends soon after as it helped explain my nausea and tremors. took me 2 years to tell work though as i was worried about the impact. I don’t go out my way to tell people unless they ask
My personal approach is to be open about PD but not to make a big deal about it. So if I am in a situation where people are likely to notice my symptoms - tremor, difficulty with names, etc - I will mention that I have PD. This seems to set their minds at rest: "Oh okay, that's what is going on."However I definitely don't want to be defined by the disease or to play for sympathy. After all, there are millions of people in this world with worse problems than me...
I tell folks only if the symptoms are readily apparent. Aside from very close family/friends. Even they feel a need to check in on me and I prefer to try to ignore it as much as I can. So I tell them I'll let them know if changes occur I'm struggling with.
