" according to research, DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) can indeed increase alpha-synuclein clumping, meaning it promotes the aggregation and formation of clumps of the alpha-synuclein protein, which is associated with Parkinson's disease; studies have shown that even low doses of DMSO can accelerate this aggregation process both in vitro (in test tubes) and in cells.

Key points about DMSO and alpha-synuclein:

Mechanism:

DMSO can alter the protein's environment by impacting its folding and interactions with other molecules, making it more prone to aggregation into clumps.

Relevance to Parkinson's:

Since abnormal alpha-synuclein aggregation is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease, the ability of DMSO to increase clumping is concerning and may be a factor to consider in research related to the disease. "

Low dose DMSO treatment induces oligomerization and accelerates aggregation of α-synuclein

"Results

DMSO treatment increases α-syn particle-size and stimulates in vitro aggregation

During our work with DMSO solubilized chemical cross-linkers, often used to verify the existence of cellular α-syn tetramers, we discovered an unexpected DMSO-dependent effect on α-syn structure. Combined with the widespread usage of DMSO in biomedical research, and limited but concerning information regarding the influence of DMSO treatment on α-syn behavior14,15, we decided to perform a comprehensive study, to elucidate the role of DMSO treatment on α-syn assembly. First, to assess the size distribution of recombinant α-syn in the absence and presence of low doses of DMSO, we performed a series of dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses in the presence or absence of DMSO. Here, short exposure of α-syn to DMSO increased the particle size of α-syn in a concentration-dependent manner as evident both by mass% (Fig. 1A) and intensity% (Supplementary Fig. 1A). Contrary to the observations made with α-syn, DMSO did not induce a size shift in the globular control protein carbonic anhydrase"

What is the purpose of DMSO? Is it a chelating agent?

I understand the “research “, but has anyone actually used DMSO, and if so, what was your experience?

I use DMSO successfully to manage pain at a 2% DMSO/water dilution rate, sprayed onto and rubbed into sore areas. I limit my daily dose to 0.5 ml.

Various DMSO publications recommend much higher dose rates including the A - Z DMSO guide linked below. I tend to err on the side of caution until I know what effect it is going to have...

I can't recommend for or against it, but if you are going to use it, be sure you are using pharmaceutical-grade DMSO, otherwise it could have various impurities that will be absorbed into your body.
