thanks for this. Anyone know dosage?

' Participants consumed a 250 mL beverage containing 42 and 84 mg total sarmentosin, similar to that present in one and two servings, respectively, of a commercial BC juice (A̅repa Performance). Sucrose, BC flavouring, and coloring were added to the beverages to blind for taste and appearance'

‘To our knowledge, this is the first report on the MAO-A/B inhibitory bioactivity of sarmentosin and its caffeoyl-, coumaroyl-, and feruloyl esters as well as the first published report of sarmentosin as a constituent in BCs. Sarmentosin has been identified in Crassulaceae species, Ribes fasciculatum var. chinense, Rhodiola species, and Ribes uva-crispa ‘

So it is in rhodiola too! That might be why rhodiola is effective.

barkers.co.nz/shop/unsweete... is the one we buy. It's a different brand. I knew it had an mao inhibitor in it but not what the compound was.

Contraindications

The use of levodopa is contraindicated with the concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) because it can lead to a hypertensive crisis. There should be a 14-day washout period when switching from levodopa to an MAOI or vice versa.

’Brown says there are synthetic MAO-B inhibitors available on the market which have been reported to have several adverse side effects.’

I wonder if this natural maoi doesn’t cause the same side effects?

I am going to try and track down these guys and find out as if they are going to be issuing press releases in public newspapers they need to have warning if it is dangerous.

Interestingly hubby has had a bad winter (in nz) back to his low mood do nothing state but I started him on rhodiola rosea 8 august which has been helping my son who is a bit adhd and he has gradually got better. See rhodiola has this compound too. Might be spring too of course. The last 2 weeks I gave him this Blackadder blackcurrant juice from barkers coincidentally before reading article and it is noticeable the difference in him. He is suddenly up and off his PC, taking interest in everything, back to his previous good state.

But also we are trialling a new multinutrient from energyblueprint to see if we can substitute some of the Hardys DEN (long story, our regulatory body has banned our importer from importing Hardys as they have reclassified it as a pharmaceutical because it works, so now it has to be prescribed by a GP and we have to import it ourself in small quantities which makes it even more expensive 😖 because they aren’t funding it)

I also restarted him on the high DHA fish oil 4.5 mL which I remembered he was taking last time he felt good. And I am giving him 1 cup of St. John’s wort tea per day too. (Also comes with warnings, I know).

At the moment he is happy, busy doing jobs around the house , engaging in conversation and not on his pc all day!

The way maoi work is by slowing the breakdown of dopamine. His genetics say he has a problem with dopamine breaking down too quickly. So maybe a bit of this was what he needed. I am on the look out for manic behaviour as previous times he has started to feel this good on prescribed meds it soon turns to manic behaviour- too little sleep, driving too fast, impulsive gambling (unusual for him) and spending on stuff we don’t need , signing up to all sorts of clubs, subscriptions etc and eating too much. I’m watching him like a hawk and will reduce the new additions to his regime if I see it’s going this way.

His blood pressure is usually too low which can make him light headed so I will keep an eye on that too.

He says he is sleeping really soundly and hasn’t been up in the night to pee which is unusual. His constipation has gone again which was a problem when he was bad in winter

Oh, and I reduced his thiamine a little. He was on alternating days with 500, 1000mg. I have dropped the second capsule to 2 per week from 4 per week.

As usual too many changes at once to pin down what helped

True ... And not enough time to trial one thing at a time.

I am surprised that DEN is now a drug in your country, even though it is a nutraceutical or multivitamin blend.

yes, the previous govt tried to put through a therapeutic products bill that any natural product has to go through a drug style clinical trial before being allowed. The current govt reversed that so they (Medsafe our regulator) are picking off things one at a time if any ingredients are over the max levels set in 1985 legislation regardless of any testing done in other similar countries. I think it’s just a back door way of getting what they want.

Nutraceuticals, such as vitamin supplements and multivitamins, can also be unsafe Jay. It's good that Medsafe is monitoring the situation, so you're not solely reliant on the commercially-driven research from producers like DEN and the NZ blackcurrant lobby. DEN multivitamin contains, among other things, an irresponsible high dosage of B6 in the toxic pyridoxine hydrochloride form.

JayPwP profile image
JayPwP in reply toEsperanto

Agreed...

Doesn't DEN contain B2 to convert Pyridoxine to P-5-P?

LAJ12345 profile image
LAJ12345 in reply toJayPwP

Yes, and hubby also takes extra b2

I am pretty sure the Medsafe push is led by psychiatrists who feel these products are taking away their power. They had a go a few years ago to try and ban it so Hardys had to relabel it for NZ to get around rules. A psychiatrist hubby saw took exception to him coming off his ssri and replacing with Hardys even though he had tried to kill himself on the drug he prescribed. With Hardys he hasn’t needed antidepressants. His only other suicidal period coincided with the Parkinson neurologist increasing his levodopa.

Pyridoxine B6 toxicity occurs when high doses are consumed, and the body can experience adverse effects regardless of riboflavin B2 status. Therefore, while adequate riboflavin may enhance overall Vitamin B6 metabolism and utilization, it is not a safeguard against the toxicity that can arise from excessive pyridoxine intake.

we’ve been using it for 5 years with no problems with very good results. They are allowing doctors to prescribe it but not let us buy it even though you can buy all the separate components.

Medsafe are a pack of bureaucrats . The regs haven’t been updated since 1985. Hardys has 1 mg more zinc than allowed under the rules but has less than eating 2 oysters. Also high b12 but not cyanocobalamin so plenty of research saying the amount is safe.

The product has been around for decades and had many trials with b6 not causing issues.

Fortunately, there are organizations that keep a close watch on matters. While there may certainly be criticisms aimed at Medsafe, just as there are with the FDA in the U.S. and the EMA in Europe, they play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and effectiveness of medicines and medical products. Approximately 40% of YouTube videos with “medical advice” contain scientifically inaccurate information. I understand that scientific validation may seem outdated to some, but in the sea of information that inundates us, I prefer to consult what experts have to say about it. However, we often let ourselves be swayed by enticing commercial influences instead.

Tried the experts who nearly killed my husband following their advice. I don’t trust them now.
