Choking on phelgm

I am having great difficulty clearing the phlegm in throat. I can cough it up part way and then it gets stuck and I literally cannot breathe. I did this at a family gathering over the summer and today walking along the sea wall. I have been told I turn blue it’s that bad. It’s like my throat just freezes shut. I try not to panic but I can’t help it. I am so scared. Sometimes I have this huge belch that hurts that comes from deep in my stomach but it doesn’t help. Diagnosed with PD in 2017. I participate in Rock Steady, walk and yoga. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I feel like this is the way I’m going to die. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you considered what is causing the phlegm? Allergies or something in your diet? Would drinking a hot beverage help?

I take NAC for this

It could be something you’re eating that’s creating the phlegm? Often culprits are dairy, gluten and sugar. You could try elimination diet to see if that helps. Drink more water to possibly “dilute” the phlegm. Consider a visit to a Naturopathic Dr to help get to the bottom of this.

Have you tried Xyzal? It cleared my phlegm.

I looked Xzal up and it's an antihistamine, so contraindicated for my husband who has prostatitis. Too bad!

Here are the contraindications listed:

Before taking Xyzal, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, kidney disease, or gallbladder problems.

My husband says this is what will kill him. I would think that sipping a liquid that thins the phlegm would help. I don't have PD, but get thick phlegm. Slowly sipping tonic water, lemonade that's not too sweet, ice tea type liquids help me with it. Especially tea.

My very elderly dad had what we called mucus attacks which were very scary. I've seen here and there that this is a PD symptom. After Dad started on the B1 therapy, he didn't have any attacks for months. His chronic runny nose also cleared up.

Extended release MUCINEX can do wonders for this problem.

i am having trouble with phlegm also. NAC seems to be helping by thinning the mucus so I can swallow it. The forum in this site recommended Musinex and Ambroxol. I haven’t tried them. They are supposed to be thinning agents as well.

some people have suggested looking into acid reflux as a cause

Wishing you the best. I know how terrifying not getting enough air feels

Thank you everyone! It’s been a rough couple of days. The suggestions are great and have been doing hot and cold liquids, tea, water, seltzer, soup…I did manage to get into the doctor. Did an X-ray to see if I aspirated anything. Fortunately, I did not aspirate. I know I have GERD, but famatodine does not work too well. So I know that is more than likely the cause of the phlegm. However my question is when you are choking in spite of taking all precautions, how do you regain control of your breath. Because this choking has happened without the mucus and I can choke on water.

My primary doctor has ordered a swallow test. I am taking mucinex. Not terribly happy with my neurologist right now. I feel he should be more in tune to o what is happening but when I tell him what I am experiencing it appears like he has rarely heard of such a phenomenon. Then shrugs his shoulders.

Thank his for this forum.
